F2G Super Corsair Racer Kit Bash

November 27, 2012 · in Aviation · · 5 · 3K

This was one of my first forays into AMS and kit bashing. I started with a Special Hobbies , and added the wings from an 1/48 -1A, because I wanted the flaps down, and I wasn't about to chop up a Tamiya kit. I do realize that the intakes are incorrect, as well as the outer wing panels not having enough dihedral, but I like the final result. I included a picture of the engine to show all the wiring, exhaust plumbing and valve push rods I added, because it is completely hidden on the completed model. I have a 20 page booklet , with pictures, I created in the process of building this kit. I can send a copy to any interested party.

  1. George... I love air racers and yours is a beauty. Yours will be the standard when I get around to building mine.

  2. not worthy! not worthy! Awesome build- I NEED mine to be done like this! Thanks for the inspiration!

  3. A very nice model. I like the work on that engine - even if you did violate my rule of "if you can't see it, I didn't do it" 🙂

For those thinking of doing this model, a word of advice: SH has done the restored airplane. Thus the cockpit is quite different from the original airplane (which was based on the F4U-4. The True Details F4U-4 cockpit will work here). The restoration uses F4U-5 wings, which are all metal, so if you're doing it, you need to sand off the fabric ribbing and rescribe. Getting the True Details cockpit and then making the "dog house" air scoop up front (not hard) will get you right to the original.

  4. George,
Going back home n time to post comments and this is beautiful. I have looked at all your posts and you do excellent work.
