Tamiya 1:48 Swordfish

November 13, 2012 · in Aviation · · 2 · 1.7K

This was an 'off and on again' project, mainly due to self induced problems. I still don't have the sequence of rigging steps figured out, and when they should fit in the construction, painting and weathering stages.

I had no major problems with construction of the kit, although some of the smaller pieces gave me some heartburn due to age [mine, not the kit's].

I used Dupli Color Sanding Sealer [white] for the primer and left it for the white portions of the kit. Model Master enamels thinned with lacquer thinner sprayed through a Grex for the camouflage, and brushed on for the cockpit and some other small parts.

Invisible thread [0.004"] for the antenna wiring and rigging, and stretched sprue for the elevator and rudder control cables.

Sprayed Future, decals, more Future, then MM Acrylic Semi Gloss sprayed straight from the bottle.

An excellent kit, with several optional schemes. I plan to do another just based on the satisfaction this one provided. About the only change will be to make the eyelets and turnbuckles smaller; these appear too large to me.

  1. Is that the kit torpedo, Larry...? It looks Japanese to me. Nice work and even nicer paint job. I'd never attempt anything that required rigging. Ya dun gud, sir.

  2. love the stringbag- have the MDC kit as well as three Tamyia kits. Might have one of the Tamiya and the MDC one done by the end of Christmas!
