Tamiya 1/48 scale P-51D Mustang with Custom Markings for a Christmas Present

December 2, 2012 · in Aviation · · 3 · 1.3K

This idea hatched in August, 2011 when my sister expressed her love for the ! "It's shiny and sounds so cool"! Little light bulb in my head went "Ping!" and this was the result. It is my first time playing with Alclad and making my own decals. The civil reg number under the tail is her birthday, and the aircraft number is Christmas Day, 2011. The codes are her initials, and the shield and nickname are from her SCA persona. Her name is on the left canopy rail, and mine is on the right, as the crew chief. Oh, and her name is Joanne, but we all call her 'Jo'. The colours are her favorites, yellow and purple. They actually look really good on this plane.

  1. Excellent! I love it. I have done several similar projects, mainly for grand children, and several others in sports teams logos and colors. They make great gifts, and add to the fun of this hobby. Good work!

  2. What do those "kill" markings represent, George...? Can't quite make 'em out (that ain't "Snoopy", is it?)

  3. The "kill" markings are Knight's helmets with a feather plume. Joanne is a member of The Society for Creative Anachronism, in which she used to be a "heavy" fighter. They put on steel and boiled leather armor and proceed to wail on each other with rattan swords. I felt the helmets worked better than Hakenkruzes, and they look cooler, too.
