Douglas A-1J Skyraider

February 6, 2013 · in Aviation · · 10 · 2.9K

Here's my latest build and first attempt at an Internet upload. The 1:48 A-1 was a pleasure to build, my only additions were the zoom set, hypodermic needle gun barrels and a Milliput shroud behind the cockpit. It was painted with Model Master acryls.

  1. Great job, the depth of color in the SEA cammo is striking!

  2. Patrick, welcome onboard and congratulations on you firstonline posting. Hope it isn't the last one as this is a very fine Skyraider. Nicely done exhaust stain and oil stains, would you please share the colors used?

  3. Superb. Love the camo and the weathering.

  4. Thanks for kind comments! I pre-shaded with black on the panel lines as well as where the exhaust staining would be. The colors are model master acryl, light grey 4765, rlm 71 dunkelgrun 4781, medium green 4734, and dark tan 4709. I added a drop or two of white to each for scale effect and fade. I found this combination on the cyber modeler website in their color reference section. I started the exhaust stain with highly thinned Floquil weathered black which Is very dark grey. Then finished it off with thinned model master gloss black enamel. I was experimenting with AK interactive streaking grime and fuel streaking on the centerline fuel tank, and the oil streaking on the fuselage is Windsor Newton oil paints.

  5. Very nice work all-around. Have to agree with the other comments throughout.

  6. Excellent work overall. You definitely got the Skyraider exhaust and oil weathering right.

  7. Great job, and what have you been waiting for?

  8. I'll try and make up for lost time!

  9. This kit is in my stash, since you stated it goes together quite well, I'll have to give it a try. Nice job, especially the paint job.Saw quite a few of these at Hobert Field in 1970. Never understood how they got the S Viet pilots to reach the peddels.
