Terry Schuler’s “The Cotton Chopper” (Tamiya, 1/48th)

February 25, 2013 · in Aviation · · 8 · 2.1K

This article was originally written and posted by my good friend David Hansen who was on imodeler at the time and I was not. Therefore this article puts me into a third person position. Being transferred to my blog March 2015, I decided to leave the article as it was originally written.
Thanks Terry

Terry Schuler, Like Benjamin Pada, is something of a Monster, having previously built the Hasegawa Thunderbolts, as well as 5 (!) of the 72nd scale P-47s.

This was the first of Terry's 48th scale Tamiya Razorbacks to be started, and the second to be completed. Paints are Model Master enamels. Terry added Eduard photoetched seatbelts and some wires coming out of the instrument cases on the back side of the instrument panel.

He also wired the R-2800 engine, though it didn't turn out to be as visible as he'd imagined.

Terry also replaced the drop tank sway braces with new ones and re-did the fuel vent line between the fuel tank and the fuselage belly.

The pitot tube was replaced with a new one made from stainless hypo needle tubing, courtesy of his diabetic cat.

Markings for "The Cotton Chopper" came courtesy of Scott Van Aken at Modelling Madness. They are AeroMaster sheet 48-222, "Zemke's Wolfpack Part XXXXLLMMVIIIII...I". Terry had no difficulties with the decals adhering to the surface, laying them down on a coat of Model Master Clear Gloss lacquer.

Terry is currently finishing up his SIXTH 72nd scale "Jug". Someday we might post some pictures of some of his other projects.

All comments are welcome; Terry looks forward to your thoughts.

  1. Beautiful presentation and photography of a "beautifully ugly" airplane. One of the better Tamiya examples I've seen built. Everything about it looks "just right". We'll be on the lookout for Terry's other models. Great work. Thanks.

  2. That is a very sharp razorback! Very well done David!

  3. Looks very natural, great coloring and shading!

  4. Great work on a great kit!
Never seen these markings done before either, makes anice change from the more popular choices.

    Excellent work!
