Scat II

July 8, 2013 · in Aviation · · 7 · 2.2K

I have started a new project that is going to be outlined in the WIP thread. I hope I can garner some insight and history on this plane that a tough man flew, Robin Olds. I admire his exploits and his raw candor. I am also using this HC in a D Day GB I have started at another site. any info would be greatly accepted.

  1. About the only thing I can tell you is the Hobby Craft kit is actually a reboxing of the Trumpeter P-38 and it is a darn good kit. It looks to be quite a bit of work though as it is quite detailed out o' the box. Good Luck.

  2. i met robin in 92 at a print signing at Virginia Baders fine art studio in Alexandria Va. ...at the time i didn't know who he was...but he talked with his hands so i knew he was a pilot...of course i have studied up on him since...what a hell of a man...stud...the kind of man who needed a war and they are the kind you want around when the fighting starts

  3. Paul,
It will be interesting to follow you on this project. Olds was definitely stunning character. I love the scheme of this P-38.

  4. Paul,
You might take a look at this before you get too far in your project. Not sure what other pictures exist of this aircraft. Good luck!

    • OK Al, here's the scoop on the poop. According to some resources of which I forgot to get titles to. He had about four Scat II P-38s of which three were painted and the other was bmf. I found a set of decals to replicate all of his aircraft including wicked woman. So in order to get along with my D Day build and the works in progress here I will continue to go this way.

  5. Hmmm. All the other pics I have seen show od over light gray but this appears to be bmf.

My Dad was a crew chief on the P-38, he never bragged about being part of WWII but every now and then told some great stories. All the pictures of his aircraft were a natural metal finish. I look forward to seeing your finished aircraft. The P-38 was quite a plane.
