1/72 Hasegawa Curtiss SOC-3 Seagull
This was a simple, little kit, that comes complete with a stand. It's a colorful addition, and looks nice next to the Airfix Duck, The SOC-3 served aboard battleships and cruisers, and was catapult launched. The wings folded back for storage.
A very nice model, but allow me to detail USN paint practices in the 1930s (something a lot of people don't understand), which will allow for more accurate schemes for those who work in the Golden Wings era:
Prior to 1935, USN aircraft were painted light grey on all aluminum surfaces, and aluminum dope on all fabric surfaces. From 1935-41, they were painted aluminum lacquer on all metal surfaces and aluminum dope on fabric surfaces. A lot of times modelers who are unfamiliar with this will have problems, particularly when they are using the box art of an early kit (this Hasegawa SOC-3 is 44 years old, having first come out in 1969) as a painting guide. As I recall, the box art on this kit showed an overall-grey model.
Not a criticism.
I built this same kit a while back. I bought it from a collector and I didn't realize it was as old as it was. I finished in a flat aluminum.
