Anigrand all resin 1/72 MiG-31 Firefox

October 11, 2013 · in Aviation · · 7 · 8.9K

When this movie came out in 1982, I just had to have a model of the Firefox. Now, thanks to and Rare-Plane Detective's booth at the Colorado Nats, I finally have one. The kit is fairly simple, consisting of appx. 26 parts, including a clear resin canopy. I did not use the landing gear, preferring to mount the plane on a clear rod. There was no detail in the cockpit, so I blacked out the canopy and went to town on the paint job. The kit was assembled using thin superglue and a few brass pins for strength at the butt joints. The entire assembly process took a little less than two hours. I love building resin! Some filling and sanding, then on to paint. I base coated the whole thing in Gunze Mr Surfacer 1500 Black, did some masking, then airbrushed Testors MM Anthracite Grey Metallic. I removed the masks and applied Alclad's Clear Blue lacquer over the whole thing for a very cool Sci-Fi look. Six decals were applied then the whole thing was sealed under Alclad Clear Gloss Lacquer. It was then mounted on its carefully bent clear acrylic rod and called done. Total build time: three weeks. I think I've got my groove back! About time, too!
