1/48 Hasegawa Bf 109K-4

November 23, 2013 · in Aviation · · 12 · 2.7K

I added a prop from fusion, wheels and exhausts from Ultracast, and resin elevators from my parts box, I have no idea who made them. The pilot figure is from PJ Productions and was extensively modified to fit that tiny cockpit. I primed with Mr Surfacer and for years my paint of choice was Gunze-Sanyo but it is no longer available. Late war K models seem to be a hodge podge of parts and interpreting old black and white photos leaves a lot of room for poetic license. The fuselage underside is Model Master acrylic sky green (some refer to this as RLM 84) The nose is MM RLM 77, RLM 75, then RLM 82 (Dark Green). The tail is RLM 83 (Light Green) with a hard mottle of 82. The wings are 82/75 on top and Vellejo RLM 76 and Alclad aluminum on the bottom. The MM and Vallejo did not adhere as well as Gunze-Sanyo and I couldn't get as good of control with the MM. Since my preference is acrylic (or similar) I have switched to Tamiya. It behaves like Gunze-Sanyo and I got my control back and the adherence is very good. The base is once again the hard to use Celluclay. Lots of shrinkage around the edges that i had to fill. The trees are Woodland Scenics and I believe the static grass is from Verlinden. This aircraft was flown by Gunter Landt of 11/Jg 53.

  1. Very nicely done, John...I like what you've done with the base. I also understand about "plastic surgery" when it comes to getting ill-fitting pilot figures in place. I'm surprised you had resin elevators for a 48th Me-109 in your PARTS BOX - rather unusual (at least from my perspective)...you must have an extensive 'warehouse'. Again...excellent workmanship.

    • Thank you Craig. I do have quite a collection of resin and photo-etch parts I have collected over the years. Many I don't even remember where they came from and some I couldn't even tell you the maker like those elevators. Same with some of the figures I have. All of the stuff I have is 1/48.

      • My preferred scale as well. I also have a few "parts & pieces" from a plethora of kits, but, like yourself, nothing really 'labeled' or identified with any means of regularity. Most of the stuff I'll probably never use, but couldn't throw away, because - ("...I might need this someday...") - lol

  2. Unfortunately i have forgotten to look at my parts stash on occasion and ordered detail sets that I alreay have...then I have to get a kit to fit on that detail set.

  3. You can mix Tamiya paints to get the colors you need. I can't remember which site (HS?) has the list of instructions. You might also like Xtracrylix - the colors are very accurate. Two Bobs has had them here in the States. I sure do miss Gunze, can't understand why they wouldn't do the label change like Tamiya did year before last. Mm acrylics are the worst.

    Nice work on the model.

  4. Thank you Tom. I did try Xtracrylics on a P-47D. I liked it OK and it seemed to adhere just fine but I did find I liked the Tamiya paint best. I will post my P-47 on here when I get the photos together. I have downloaded the Tamiya recipes and been practicing and i really like like the way it airbrushes.
