T-38A Talon in 1/48 scale by Wolfpack.

January 29, 2014 · in Aviation · · 10 · 2.4K

Finding this kit was sheer good fortune as my local IPMS Club (IPMS - NSW) is having a "Two Seat Trainer" competition later this year & I had thoughts of entering. I hadn't heard of Wolfpack before, but I liked the box image & the aircraft & the price was OK too.

Lovely kit, great fit (mostly), lots of internet pics for details & excellent decals. My first choice of color scheme was originally white but paint coverage was unsatisfactory so I went for the gray scheme. The open canopies were a bit fiddly but there was really no alternative given the excellent cockpit detail provided. The only extra needed was seat belts, which I scratch built from stretched plastic strip. This was a fun build; I hope you like it.

Cheers,

Tony

  1. Nice, simple scheme well done...I like that.

  2. Tony, this is an aircraft I have a special interest in, as I flew in a white one out of Eglin AFB in Florida, way back in the early 1970's. I seem to have always been out of luck when looking for a decent 1/48 kit of the T-38, and it looks like this one by Wolfpack is a winner. I will try to find it. You have done a beautiful job building it. Many thanks for posting.

  3. Nice work Tony. I sure would like to know more about your method of producing seat belts.

    • Hi Jack,

Thanks for the comments. I gather that Wolfpack is well regarded for their resin after market products & that this is their first full kit. I'm certainly glad I found it! Re the seatbelts: it took me ages to learn how to stretch sprue & I found that I could use the same process to stretch any cross section of plastic - tubing, various other shapes too - L,H.& flat as well, so I just cut a piece of thin sheet into a strip about 1/4" wide, held it over a candle & stretched it. It worked perfectly! In this scale buckles are OK from small squares glued on. I glue my straps to the back of the seat (in this instance) & soften them with a small amount of liquid glue to bend them over the seat top & go from there. I hope this helps. I am happy to use resin & etched brass if it is in the kit , but I rarely buy after market stuff as I prefer to try & scratch build where possible.

      Cheers,

      Tony

  4. the f5 and it's derivatives have all ways been one of my favorites...what a gorgeous design and the model is perfect...love the graphite metallic paint job...

  5. Nicely done Tony. I'm not familiar with Wolfpack kits but this one looks good.

  6. well done! your model came out great, and it will no doubt inspire many to build the wolfpack kit as well - cheers!

  7. Tony,
Absolutely beautiful model of a very beautiful airplane. I really like the scheme and your excellent work.

  8. Very nice Tony, I just fold over some masking tape and spray it when I make seat belts. Your method seems more advanced!

  9. Like the others have said, a very neat build of an unusual 1/48 model. I'm with Richard on masking tape which I've used in the past on F1 cars, it has a slight texture on it which I think works well in the larger scales (1/20 and 1/12), but your belts look great here.
