1/48 Pfalz D.IIIa, SPAD XIII, and Albatros D.Va.

March 16, 2014 · in Aviation · · 17 · 1.3K

A few more older builds I was e-mailing this morning that I thought I'd share. The Pfalz and Albatros are kits. They were painted with Humbrol enamels, except for the mauve on the Albatros' wings. I used ModelMaster Napoleanic Violet for that. The SPAD is a DML kit modified to the early configuration with rounded wing tips. I painted it with Humbrol enamels and used MSAP decals.

Of course I learned that Pfalz cockpits were painted gray, not wood color after I finished it.

  1. Nice, John. Your examples here are clean builds, and a credit to you in this scale.

  2. Anyone who can have the patience to rig a bi-plane has my vote.
A very nice pair of WW1 planes, all the more poignant as it the centennial anniversary of the Great War this year.
    Well done John

  3. Good, clean builds. Good decal work.

  4. Nice trio.

    Sincerely, Vlad.

  5. Nicely Done Sir

  6. Gee, nice work on some early difficult paint applications. Are these free hand or airbrushed painted? Great skill either way.

  7. John,
All of them are great looking models very skillfully done. I especially like the Spad.

  8. It's always nice to see these early planes, especially when they are as good as these.
