Attack Squadron 1:72 F8F-1 Bearcat

April 21, 2014 · in Aviation · · 9 · 3.4K

This is Attack Squadrons resin -1 . Though the fuselage is in three segments, fit is good. very nicely detailed cockpit, engine, and engine/wheel bay. a multi-media kit with a photo etched fret and a vacuformed canopy. i have an issue with the 3D printed prop hub, there are ridges in the part from what i can only assume is from the 3D printing process.

i chose to model a Naval Reserve bird from NAS Glenview, 1947-49. the orange reserve band, stars n bars, and the "V"s are painted. numbers are dry transfers. some small data decals are from the kit and scrounged from other sheets. Sea Blue is my own mix from Mr. Color, Gunze and Tamiya paints. i originally painted the reserve band too yellow, so i went back and applied filters using Vallejo acrylics. worked well.

  1. Roger, nice painting in this scale with the finer points of detail. As it happens, I'm building the Trumpeter F8F1B at present (1/32).

There's a mix of examples out there re colours (even museum examples vary in finishes), but I support Tom Cleaver's view that anything under cowling was zinc yellow, with gear wells, covers, gear, hubs and wing folds in Glossy Sea Blue.

Also, i think this is the first example I've heared of where 3D printing was used for a kit part.

Interesting subject, and a well-modelled example. Well done.

  2. Looks really good. We have a club member who is a designer for a 3-D company & I have seen some examples of their work. They only thing I can say about the ridges is they designer either meant them to be there (right or wrong) or there was a fault in the program.

  3. Very fine paint job and detail work, Roger...(the antennas didn't go unnoticed).

  4. Great build there Roger.
    Well done sir.

  5. Brilliant, Roger, especially in 1/72.

  6. Another Jewel Roger. I really like the fading of the orange band with the yellow under neath. Looks accurate along with the canopy. Good things come in small packages.

    Two thumbs up.

  7. Roger,
    Very nicely done.

  8. great job...makes me itch just looking at it...smile

Thank you posting so quick built our Bearcat kit. 3D printed hub: it is recommended to paint it with some more layers of surfacer. 3D print is included to ensure good fit and firm mount for propeller blades. Resin cast one would make problems with casting so small and detailed piece.
