Airfix 1/72 Hawker Typhoon 1b

June 6, 2014 · in Aviation · · 14 · 2.5K

It is still June 6th over here so here is my contribution.

It is Mn317/ZYB of No. 247 (China British) Sqn., 124 Wing as of June 1944.

Late in the build I convinced myself that it was a 3-blade prop not a 4-blade like came with the kit. It is not the kit's fault. I used decals from Xtradecal & of all the choices on the sheet I think this is the only one that doesn't give the blade type. After some modification to the Airfix base plate & the cross section of Academy's 3-blade I was back in business.

Vallejo primary colors (never again), Tamiya stripes, Polly S Sky & Alclad flat final coat.

I see in my final shot the pilot is about to drop a rocket on the runway. Better fix that.

Thanks for looking 7 I will be waiting for the next group build.

that is an absolutely stunning piece of work...but i'd expect no less of a car guy...who could put on a better finish...well done

  2. You guys that build in that tiny scale disgust me...they more often that not look better than my 48th scale stuff.
Oh wait...I know - you have more TALENT and PATIENCE than me...yeah..that's it.

  3. Well you've finally beaten it into submission. The panel line wash lots great, what did you use?

    • That is watered down Polly S grimy black applied in the panel lines with a fine brush. It's not really a wash because it doesn't want to come off so you have to be careful.

  4. Beautiful job, Al. Craig's right, talent and patience. Cars, planes, tanks, it doesn't matter, the skills always come through.

  5. There is a guy who comes to the local HobbyTown model contest and he does build everything! Also everything he builds is nice and crisp, no sloppiness to be found. He does gravitate more toward cars, but he also does 1/72 planes, armor, ships and sci-fi. Joe is right, the skill set works on anything.

  6. Wow! Looks great Al! I didn't know you dabbled on the dark side of armor :-)!

  7. Your patience has paid off, Al, the Typhoon is a stunning piece of work, especially in this scale.

  8. Great job Al, the Airfix kit builds quite nicely.
As for Vallejo paints they can be a pain but with careful application many light coats they can be stunning.
Well done on the build Al.

  9. Great work Al, it all came good in the end mate. Good looking Typhoon.

  11. Thanks to all for your kind & encouraging remarks.

  12. Nice clean build, as always!

  13. Hi Al, absolutly well done ! Invasion stries are a challenge (to me) and
keeps me more or less off. Your Typhoon is a good motivation to try it
and a piece of art !
