Avro Shackleton AEW2 – Sanger 1/48th vacform

August 29, 2014 · in Aviation · · 17 · 2.9K

The Avro is one of my favourite post-war RAF aircraft, and the AEW2 version with its big radome makes for a very interesting looking aircraft.

This 'Growler' has been completely overlooked by the 'mainstream' injection manufacturers, so the only option I had to add a Shack to my collection was Sanger's vacform.

This is a lovely kit - the parts fit well and it comes with a good set of white metal parts. I used a modified Lancaster undercarriage however, as it was more refined than the kit's offering. I scratch-built the interior and bomb bay, and decals were a mixture of the kit's and from the spares box.

I completed the model as WR960 'Dougal' of 8 Squadron, based at RAF Lossiemouth in the early 1990's.

I also have the Mk3 version in the stash - sometime soon I'll be building this model a companion!
