Bf 109 G6 9/JG52, Erich Hartmann, Russia 1943

August 10, 2014 · in Aviation · · 12 · 3.1K

This is Hasagawa's G6, detailed-up with the Master Detail set. I confess this isn't a new build; it was done a year or so back. I was going through some previous files on Photobucket and saw a couple of photos of it, and decided to update the photo references.

Hartmann was the highest scoring ace of all time, with 352 aerial kills. Flying Bf 109s against the overmatched Soviet MiGs and Yaks for almost three years, he accumulated his unrivalled score. Hartmann claimed, that of all his accomplishments, he was proudest of the fact that he never lost a wingman.

He is also reputed to have said. "Get close .. when he fills the entire windscreen ... then you can't possibly miss."

Some interesting photos on the link below, many well known, but a few unusual images as well.

  1. I think it's nearly impossible to make a bad model from that kit. Yours is definitely a stand-out job. I particularly like the accuracy of the recreated mottle.

  2. Yes...I was going to mention that mottling effect as well...exactly how DID you accomplish that?

    • I used a mottle mask - irregular shapes cut into an etched flat profile. I know Eduard do them. I think the 1/32 set I have is an own-brand from Hannants in Lowestoft, Suffolk - a set that separates profiles by type, e.g., Bf109, Bf110. I usually make a pass using one of the camo colours, followed by a second with a second colour. You can use a brush and stipple them but I use an airbrush at around 15psi.

  3. Nice work as usual Rob no matter when you built it.

  4. Great job Rob as per normal.

  5. It's just piling on but beautiful paint work Bob. Well done all around.

  6. good job for a famous pilot...
