Accurate Miniatures 1/48th TBM-3 Avenger

December 21, 2014 in Aviation

Despite having built two of these in the past, that ball turret still gave me fits during assembly. BUT… thank goodness for pre-cut masks (it’s almost a must-have on this kit). This is the first one where I opened the bomb bay – actually I found it easier to display in this fashion than closin’ ’em up. Go figure. I didn’t have any GSB, so I tried using “Blue Angel” blue on a scrap piece. It didn’t look all that bad, so I went ahead and sprayed the whole thing (almost) with a rattle can. Except for the masks and a piece of EZ line antenna, it’s entirely OOB. Weathering with Doc O’Brian’s powders.
Now I wish I had another AM Dauntless. Don’t remember what happened to the one I did have. I think that would pretty much round out my WWII naval aviation fleet.

  1. Hello Craig…Wow, you really know how to turn them out. Nice looking Avenger with those Flight 19 markings. I congratulate you on your courage to open the bomb bay and detail it. I fully agree that a canopy mask would be essential on that model to help maintain one’s sanity. I look forward to your next building project.

    • I appreciate the response, Jim…and as I said, opening the bomb bay wasn’t all that difficult (after all, if I could do it, anyone could). Likewise, I’m looking forward to your next completion as well.

  2. The markings really show up well in your photographs, as well as the neat work with the masking. You must be really pleased with how this one turned out, Craig, good job. By the way, have you got that second Tamiya 1/32 Corsair yet?

    • Thanks for the words of encouragement, George…although if you could inspect the model REALLY close, you might have a different opinion – πŸ™‚
As to that new Tamiya Corsair release, alas, I haven’t gotten it – yet.

  3. I like it. I haven’t built any Avengers yet accept I tried to build the old Revell kit and gave up half way through. I just got the Hasegawa 1/48 F-22 with photo etch bay doors and cockpit details, and that is going to take a while:)

    • I’ve given up on a few myself over the years, Nathaniel….as an example, Kitty Hawk’s first release of the F-35B was, in my opinion, an engineering disaster – NOTHING fit.
As for PE, I avoid it religiously if I can. πŸ™

  4. fabulous…one of your best

  5. Great turkey Craig! I’ve gotta get me one of these! Blue Angel Blue looks great on quite a few things! If it’s a little light for this, that’s okay. I’ve seen one out on the show circuit that is REALLY blue! If you have any left over, I suggest Mobius’ Hudson Hornet. Looks fabulous in BAB with an ivory roof! (And is a spectacular kit as well! I hope they turn some of their attention to aircraft!)

  6. That’s awesome mate! Great weathering and some lovely detail, especially on the bomb bays.

  7. I would also say one of your best. They just keep getting better.
    One of my favorites.
    California Steve

  8. Another nice build Craig. I particularly like the “on it’s nose” training shot.

  9. Excellent Craig, I think it’s one of your best as well

  10. She looks great Craig! Your canopies look super my friend!

  11. Beautiful Avenger!!! The Accurate Miniature kit of the Avenger still ranks as the best Avenger in quarter scale. My Avenger needs to come out of the stash asap. Well done!!!

  12. A very nice Avenger, Craig. looks great with these markings, The canopy
needs really masks, came out perfect on yours.
You build it, mine are both still in my stash πŸ™

  13. Nice looking Avenger, Craig. These greenhouse types always look the business if well executed.

  14. Well done Craig, I really love this one!

  15. That’s a beautiful model Craig. The open bomb bay with bombs inside is a great touch. The Avenger is one of my favourite Navy aircraft. I’ll be posting a few profiles of them soon.

  16. A beautiful “gloss” finish in scale, great job!

  17. Nice one, Craig. You’ve made my mind up. I’ve just got to have a go at an Avenger.

  18. Lovely build there Craig.
Some pretty sharp masking on the canopy/turret.
    Looks good mate.
    Well done.

  19. Craig, that is gorgeous! I’ve always like the Avenger and this is a beautiful example!
