1/48 Tamiya Spitfire Mk.Ia K9955

March 11, 2015 · in Aviation · · 19 · 3.5K

This was finished a few months ago and recently photographed. Here is Mk.Ia with the markings of RAuxAF No 602 City of Glasgow Squadron at Drem- East Lothian, Scotland. This Mk.I K9955 was flown by pilot officer Archie McKellar in March 1940.

When I saw Fundekals set I have decided to built McKellar s Mk.I. Base kit is Tamiya s Spitfire Mk.I Note the one of the earliest examples of nose art and kill marks on a RAF fighter. Also note the antenna mast and the sheet metal “L” shaped blinkers on the cowling.

I have used some after market goodies to improve Tamiya's Spitfire:

  • Eduard instrument panel

  • Ultracast resin seat

  • Ultracast resin cockpit door without crowbar & fittings

  • Ultracast exhausts

Painting was made with Gunze and Tamiya acrylics. Metal “L” shaped blinkers on the cowling made from thin plastic sheet. Maybe it s a little overscale but I have to live with this for this time being.

As it s mentioned above, decals are from Fündekals .

Carpe Diem

I heard that Airfix has just released a new tooling Sptfire Mk1 including some parts for very early versions. It will be good to built Douglas Farquhar early Mk1.

  13. Tail end Charlie here. I've never met a Spitfire I didn't like and this build is proof positive that I'm not wrong in saying so.

  15. The best Spitfire Mk.a I've seen in this scale. I especially like the camouflage application & the overall 'look'. You've captured it perfectly!

  16. Damn Tolga that is SWEET. Beautiful. Love the subtle shading in the paint job.
Anybody else notice the squadron codes say "Loo"? We know what a Loo is in England, right? Wonder if the pilots had any comments on this?
