Airfix’s next big bomber in 1/72 scale revealed

August 28, 2015 · in News · · 4 · 2.3K

next four-engine bomber release in 1/72 scale has been revealed at the company's blog. Coming in 2016 is the new-tool Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress. Accompanying this welcome anouncement were the attached series of 3D CAD screenshots of the projected kit.

This is said to be engineered based on original fanufacturers' drawings and technical information obtained from the Smithsonian plus measurements of a real B-17G 23-1983 ‘Mary Alice' from the American Air Museum at Duxford.

Currently, the kit is still quite early in the production process. It is expected to go on sale in the final quarter of 2016.

The Boeing B-17G will be joined by a new ground vehicle diorama set, comprising Autocar U-7144-T 4X4 tractor unit and F-1 fuel trailer and Chevrolet M6 bomb service truck.

Last in this update are the images illustrate the progress on 1/48 scale Boulton Paul Defiant - for which the tooling seems to have been completed.

Much to enjoy from Airfix in this update!

  1. This could be what a lot of us have been waiting for, or another huge disappointment. I'm hoping that Airfix has really proven they are in the game for real, by giving us a much desired model of this popular airplane. In other words, a nice kit would be nice, but a well done kit with nice panel lines, good engineering on the turrets and nice attention to detail would be a real winner. I would have to argue that no company has ever made a great 1/72 scale B-17. In todays world with the technology available to model company's, their is no excuse for producing a dude. Airfix I'm rooting for you on this one. If its as good as it should be I will have more than one on the shelf.

  2. This is one of the big news this year!
A couple of years old "new" REVELL kit It will have the dustbin of history.

I believe in the Airfix it will do the ultimate exactly B-17.

    Go..Go..Airfix.

  3. Hope that they draft nose section ( from the cockpit to the front turret) as a whole clear part area like Hasegawa did on B-24s. Otherwise I do not expect serious improvement for my opinion. Trying to neatly fit the small windows on their places will have the same problem.
