Desert Storm F-15C in 1/72 Scale

August 31, 2015 · in Aviation · · 14 · 3K

This is a model of F-15C 85-0104 58TH TFS.33RD TFW based at Tabuck AB, Saudi Arabia in January 1991.

While flying this aircraft Capt. Tony Schiavi shot down a Mig 23 on January 26, 1991. The aircraft now flies out of Elmendorf AK with the 3rd Wing 33rd TFW with the ZZ tail codes. Pictures still show the Mig-23 kill marking on the port side of the cockpit.

Not all models need to be built with new parts. The model is the scale Hasegawa kit from the late 1980s, the directions have a copyright of 1988. The decals are Repli-scale with a copyright of 1992 and were printed by Microscale. An old True Details Aces ejection seat finishes the cockpit. Finally the boarding ladder is from P.P. Aeroparts and is copyrighted 1984. The light ghost gray is Model Master Acryl and the dark ghost gray has a tint of flat black to provide more contrast. Alclad II was used to paint the metal areas at the rear ventral side of the aircraft and various shades of Testors metalizers were used on the afterburners.

The missiles came from the Hasegawa missile set as do the decals. Building, painting, decaling and finally putting the missiles on the aircraft was the most tedious part of the build.

Except for the paint all the parts date from the last century and were bought long ago.

  1. Wayne, excellent build here, I honestly thought it was a bigger scale.

  2. Excellent kit from Hasegawa at the time, basically the 48th kit shrunk down to 72nd scale, lots of parts for this scale. This is about the time Hase launched a large series of 72nd scale kits as well as their 48th scales series as well. Still a very good kit and not one of the complicated ones. A well done Eagle Wayne. Thanks for sharing.

  3. I can only concur with the above observations...well done indeed!

  4. Beautiful Eagle, well painted and presented.

  5. Nice clean build.

  6. Fantastic build there Wayne, it definitely looks bigger than 1/72!

  7. As a fellow 1/72 builder, I'm glad to see such a great looking F-15! Wonderful build and finish. Nice job!

  8. 1/72 is the best and you show that well

  9. 🙂 ... Greetings ... 🙂 :
I never get tired of seeing the F-15, this one explains it all for me, but to be honest and sincere ... I do ask ... with all due respect. We will see this one on a more elaborated diorama ... right ? it is so deserving of one ( and enclosed of course ).
    Well done.

  10. Nice work Wayne, a fine looking Eagle you have done mate.

  11. Thanks for all the comments. As you can see I really like 1/72 scale models but build lots of other scales as well. F-15s are incredible aircraft and I enjoy seeing them depart from Portland International Airport when I am transferring flights. The suggestion about a diorama is an interesting one, not a lot of ground equipment in this scale or well done pilots but now I have to look into it.
