1/48 Hasegawa F4U-4 Corsair

February 11, 2016 · in Aviation · · 14 · 2.9K

My intent was to take the Christmas break and crank out a OOB build just for fun. Funny how plans don't always work out. Always liked this bird and was able to see quite a few in the air at an airshow near Indianapolis several years ago. As usual I departed from the OOB strategy and ended up adding a Untracast seat, some bits and pieces to the cockpit from the spares box then cut the navigation lights out and added my own using clear sprue.

Rattle can Model Master medium blue enamel was used and I hand painted the cockpit in Model Master acrylics. Took forever for the blue to dry, I'll chalk that up to the winter weather. The decals were trashed so I used the one's provided in Revell's which is more of a toy than a serious model, but the decals went down quit nicely. The Antenna is nylon thread stolen from my wife's sewing box. Old kit but fit was good and it's not a complicated build. So behold my first completion for 2016.

  1. Very nice gull wing

  2. Hello Tom...What a fine model to choose for your first completion of 2016. You did a nice job on her and those decal markings look good. Although that old Hasegawa kit has been around quite a while, as you've demonstrated, it can be built into quite a respectable model. I still hold out hopes that someday Hasegawa or Tamiya will release a 1/48th F4U-4 that's more up to the standards of some of today's kits.

  3. Nicely done, Tom...I like it.

  4. Nice work. I've always liked that kit. I've built 3 and have 2 in the stash. It was actually originally released by a company called Mania, which went BK. Hasegawa acquired the mold and the rest is history.

  5. Excellent work. I really should tackle that kit. It's been sitting in a box for years.

  6. Nicely presented, Tom.

  7. Way to go Tom !, not always easy to turn one of these old kits into a beauty like this. Nice work.

  8. Great Tom! I also built this a long time ago, was/is a good kit, despite it's age. The F4U-4 was a brute, I enjoy looking at photos of them taking off from carriers with the rudder hard over and lots of aileron cranked on to control the swing and torque roll with all that power!

  9. Great work on your Corsair, Tom!

  10. Very nice Corsair! They look good in Marine markings as well.

  11. Like I said before, Corsairs always look good and make great models, and this is no exception.
