Big Friend,...Little Friend

October 28, 2016 · in Aviation · · 15 · 2K

One of the fun things of belonging to a club is the “Club Projects” that pop up throughout the year. So it was that one of my clubs (We are blessed here in Florida with many such clubs) decided it would be fun to give everyone a 2x2x2 inch wood block and a 3 month deadline to come up with something on the block.

Well I used this opportunity to build my KIDS kit of the B-17G . Later, I decided to add the 1:44th scale P-51D Old Crow to illustrate the Big Friend, Little Friend concept where our allied fighters would fly escort to any crippled aircraft they ran across.

Both kits were fun to build going together without any issues. Decals for both kits were excellent and easy to apply. The only thing I added were the prop discs, made from acetate covers from greeting card boxes, and the smoke made from cotton from the medicine cabinet.

These kind of projects are a lot of fun and afford a nice break from the more serious subjects

  1. If I'm not mistaken, that B-17 is "Nine-O-Nine" (the current livery of the Collings Foundation bird). Great little showpiece, Jack...nice job.

  2. The mighty egg ?
    Looks great !

  3. Looks like a nice fun build,

  4. A down home build.

  5. Looks like you had a lot of fun building that, Jack.

  6. Ditto the above comment, modeling is suppose to be fun. What did you use for the smoke? Cotton balls?

    • I used some cotton from a roll I use for packing. I used a couple of pieces of fine brass wire that I sprayed with contact cement so the cotton would stick to it and then airbrushed the gray color.

  7. Looks like a fun build Jack, and that is what it is about .

  8. Totally cool! Thanks for sharing!
