First Post Ever! Arma Hobby Grumman F2F-1 1/48

November 11, 2016 · in Aviation · · 23 · 2.6K

Hadn't built anything since I was a 12 year old - probably a glue covered, brush-painted Airfix or Revell kit in the Late 70s! Have a couple of boys now aged 3 and 5 - and a very good friend who is into the hobby so I got some tools together and (like many of a certain age I guess) restarted the hobby. I Fancied a go at a resin kit. Not a huge amount of info out there on this plane (comparatively) - so please forgive any inaccuracies!

  1. Welcome aboard Paul and thanks for sharing that build with us. Looks like you're off to a great start in resuming your modeling pursuits.

  2. I think you'll like it here on iModeler, Paul...and it apparently hasn't hurt your modeling skills to be on that hiatus for so long...and a resin kit to boot. Nice job.

  3. Brilliant work Paul. Only wish there were more inter-war years subjects around as there are some really smart liveries to choose from.

    Welcome to the club!

  4. πŸ™‚ ... Greetings ... πŸ™‚ :
Welcome to this forum Paul, this for sure is a very good compliment for this our hobby.
Very nice build there, it really looks like a good time piece. Nice work.

  5. Thank you all for the very kind welcome! Craig, yes I have enjoyed the site - it is the place that has most 'inspired' my return to model making. Just have to figure out what to build next...!

  6. Welcome onboard at iModeler, Paul. "Fancied a resin kit" as your first effort as a returning modeler? πŸ™‚ That daring - I wouldn't ever have the courage to do it myself! With great result- Thanks for sharing

  7. Thats a great looking re-start, Congrats !

  8. Welcome back Paul. Your story sounds the same as I returned to building models after a very long hiatus. Nice build and a resin kit as well! Keep them coming, and you'll enjoy this site, very friendly and helpful folks dwell here.

  9. Welcome sir. Great looking Grumman.

  10. Welcome, Paul, and terrific work on that F2F!

  11. Paul, welcome! Picked a nice easy one! And it turned out beautifully! Now I'm gonna have to get one.

  12. Gratifying to see one of my favorite aircraft--and one of the most seldom seen--done and done well.

  13. You 'broke your duck' with an interesting and unusual subject.

  14. Good job. Not tried a resin aircraft yet. Maybe one day.

  15. For future reference on Navy "golden wings" era biplanes: the commanding officer of VF-7 would have the crew chief in charge of this airplane keelhauled for incompetence. All the airplanes of the pre-war period in anyone's air force (outside of South America, and even then some of them) were kept in absolutely pristine condition, and none moreso than USN/USMC airplanes of the period. They used to clean off the exhaust stains after the airplane had landed before it cooled down (being easier to wipe off then).

The F2F-1 is a good first resin kit for anyone, even a biplanephobe like the Club Greeter here. Very few parts and they all fit very well. But don't expect other resin kits to live up to this standard. πŸ™‚

The information above is for future reference. What you've done here proves it really is like riding a bicycle. Quite nice.

  16. Brilliant Feedback Tom, thank you. I'll have to pretend it is just about to land so as to avoid the barnacles!

  17. Very nice model, all the more so after such a long break !

  18. Welcome Paul! Can't believe you tackled a resin kit as a comeback, but you did an excellent job! I look forward to seeing your future posts as your interests and skills progress!

  19. Welcome aboard! You're a brave man Paul, tackling a resin kit after so many years...and it looks great too!

  20. Thanks again to all for the encouragement and kind words.

  21. Hello Paul. I could not resist to have a look at your restart with kit building. and what a start it is, taking off with this very nice resin kit. Great job and very nice build, and a brave start indeed.

  22. Agreed; brave, but brilliant results - lovely subject and beautifully rendered!
