My Hellcats, all in 1/48.

December 7, 2016 · in Aviation · · 12 · 1.5K

I posted several photos of the Weekend Edition II a couple of years ago when I built it. I added resin wheels, straps for the drop tank from scrap p/e, and p/e belts. This is the best Hellcat kit available today. Very enjoyable. The only issue I had with it was a weird gap on the bottom of the cowl, which assembles from two side pieces and a front ring.

The gloss sea blue -5 is a kit that I built in 1997, when it was still new. I disliked this kit. I remember it being a snake bit project, with some fit issues at the wing/fuselage joint on the underside. The clear parts also didn't fit well in either position. I used Aeromaster decals on this one because the Hasegawa decals were the usual cream colored junk.

The tri-color -3 is an kit built in 1997 too. Very solid model considering it dates from 1971. The clear parts are ill-fitting on this model and the cockpit featured bogus detail. I added a resin seat and used Aeromaster decals.

  1. Beautiful work, John...I like 'em all.

  2. Great-looking cats John!

    • They are cool, Robert. Truth be told, I've always had trouble with Hellcats during almost 50 years of modeling. I have a few more Eduard kits in the stash and will be replacing the 2 USN Hellcats soon.

  3. It's too hard to pick my favorite one out of the bunch. They all look great to me. Thanks for sharing.

  4. They are all nice, but number 132 is my personal favorite. Beautiful Hellcats all John! 🙂

    • The British one is my favorite too. It was flown by a Sub-lieutenant Foster who shot down 5 kamikazes during the Okinawa campaign. The whole story of the BPF is fascinating and the Eduard kit is a lot of fun.

  5. THree beautiful Hellcats, good work, John.
