Revell 1/48 F-101B Voodoo

December 10, 2016 · in Aviation · · 13 · 3.5K

Built this strictly OOB several years ago. Always liked the looks of the which was part of the Century Series of jets used by the USAF., in the 50's and 60's. The Voodoo was usually armed with two externally mounted Genie nuclear tipped missiles as well as two Hughes Falcon rocket powered missiles. The Air Defense command utilized this A/C as a counter to what was believed would be formations of Russian bombers sent over Canada to the US during a nuclear war. Several variants were produced including a reconnaissance version. The Voodoo was purchased after the Air Force realized it's F-102 was lacking in performance and the F-106 was well behind schedule.

I don't remember having any great problems with the kit, and the cockpit is nicely detailed. Only issue was with the exhaust shrouds which don't align well.Used the kit decals which went down well and for some reason or another I struggled with the overall color which isn't correct. The version above represents a Voodoo from the 18th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, stationed at Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota. Tag to all you iModelers, it's now Voodoo week.

  2. Very nicely done, Tom...a good job, sir.

  3. Great F-101, Voodoo week? Dang got nothing to show, built a couple some years ago. did not survive.

  4. Tom. looks right to me. Great finish, whatever you used.

  5. Nice , Tom. I love the Voodoo!

  6. I remember 40 years ago when Air International first came out, there is a multi-part article, "the Billion Dollar bomber," about how the B-29s that landed in the USSR in WW2 and were reverse-engineered into the Tu-4 ended up costing the US a billion dollars (in those years, more like $100 billion today) to create a defense for a threat that never existed. The Soviets knew they were hopelessly behind in strategic bombers, never made more than a few of them and tried to do a "technology jump" to ICBMs.

    Nice model though.

    • Tom, the intelligence community exists to scare the hell out of us. Keeps them employed and generates $$$ for more of the same. The "bomber gap" is an excellent example.
Recall also how they picked up on the fall of the former Soviet Union. They were right on it!

  7. I really like this one Tom. Unfortunately I don't have one built to join in on the fun... I do have one in my stash though.

I mentioned to Craig how there was one sitting for many years at the Daytona Airport. It was in Vietnam era camouflage. I used to look at it all the time as a kid... There was just something about the plane that drew you to it. It disappeared when they rebuilt the airport... I'd love to know what happened to it.

Your model looks great the way it is. Thanks for sharing.

  8. Tom, meant to ask, yellow interior framing of the canopy? New to me, but I can see the point.

  9. Looks mean and purposeful.

  10. Nice looking 101 - good clean build and finish. Love the Voodoo - just finished my first (an RF - posted here: http://imodeler.com/2016/10/hasegawa-172-rf-101c/ ) and have two more I want to do - one like yours in ADF grey and one in NFM like my dad flew out of England in the 60's.

  11. I love the Voodoo. She was an *ss-haulin' bird in her day! Your Voodoo looks great Tom! I've only built one, my all-black bird, and would love to have time (and room; she's a big airplane!) for another. Thanks for sharing yours Tom! 🙂
