1/72 Super Model Cant Z 506

March 14, 2017 · in Aviation · · 18 · 3.3K

This is another old one from the stash. While several versions can be built from this kit, I tried to choose what I thought was the most colorful. I enjoyed the build, and thought the little research I did, most interesting. It was a very successful design, and carried on until 1959 in it's ASR role, and used by several countries.

I first primed the model, then painted the wings with a Krylon red. When thoroughly dry, I masked off the red with Scotch brand Washi tape. (this stuff is wonderful) I had virtually no runs or bleed, through this tape. I hand painted the tail. The silver, except the cowls, was a Ford Metallic Silver automotive paint, I found on closeout, and thought I'd give a try. The cowls received a separate treatment, as per a few of the photos I'd seen. While the props look unpainted, they are actually to the version I was trying to copy.

  1. That is gorgeous, Joe. Beautiful paint job!

  2. Beautiful, Joe.

  3. Joe, not an easy kit to build, as I recall. Chunky and klunky, though nice to have it. Nicely done, pretty seaplane. Whose paint? Modeling or actual auto paint?

    • Thanks guys. Bernard, it was actual auto touch-up paint. $2 per rattle can on close out at "Ollies". I like playing with different "over the counter" paints, and mixing my own. This was straight from the can. The GM "gray metallic" was a lot darker, almost gunmetal or pewter.

  4. Great colour scheme, Joe, really suits it.

  5. Nicely done, Joe...very eye-catching scheme.
