Eduard 1/48 Albatros D.II

March 23, 2017 · in Aviation · · 14 · 2.8K

For a challenge, this would be my first First World War subject. As the profi-pack kit, the content comes with masks and detailed photoetch and four marking options.

Woodgrain was achieved using Light Orch Oil paint, this was a challenge as took over a full week to completely dry. Assembly went together no problem with only a touch of sanding on some areas. Main painting was done with Revell Aqua and Tamiya colours, followed by the main assembly, rigging consisting of EZ Line (Much better than stretched sprue!), and a coat of XF-86 varnish.

One lovely Albatros added to the collection! With this completed Ive considered a few more WW1 aircraft added to the stash

  1. Nice job for a first attempt, Michael...that EZ line is great stuff (I use it for antennas)...the only airplane with two wings I've ever done was a Stearman - that was enough for me. 🙁

  2. Michael, that turned out really well, particularly the woodgrain effect. That couldn't have been easy. Just right, sometimes it can appear overdone to me. Not yours. Albatrii are nice looking WW I subjects. Nice rigging, too.

  3. You did a fantastic job on your Albatros. The D-III to D-V(a) were among my favorite WW1 German types, but the earlier variants were just as nice, and didn't have the wing failure problems brought on by going a single spar on the lower wing. Someday I plan on building a 1/6 scale electric RC plane in Werner Voss markings. They just look so elegant. Good job. I really like it.

  4. This is an outstanding Albatross "Big Bird," Michael! I'v always loved the look of them and this one is great. Outstanding paint job!

  5. Good effort, Mike.

  6. Really nice Mike, I say do some more bi-planes.

  7. Lovely Albatros, Michael.

  8. Nice work. It's not often that we see the D.I or D. II built.

  9. Very nice Michael! Great build and finish all the way around.

  10. That's very nice for a first one, and you went for wood grain!

A tip on wood grain: I use Tamiya Light Earth, dry-brushed with Tamiya Red Brown, then I airbrush on a coat of Tamiya Clear Yellow, and it all comes out like nice Albatros plywood under varnish. And you don't have to wait a week.

  11. Michael, this is really nice. I really like the design of the German aircraft from WW I, it just seems they were a step ahead of everyone else during this time period. Well done a this beauty !

  12. Looks great! A classic aircraft.

  13. Nicely done
