Revell 1:24 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR "Uhlenhaut Coupé"

July 12, 2017 · in Automotive · · 18 · 4.8K

Every now and then I like to build some cars in 1:24 or 1:25 scale. It makes a change from aircraft and camouflage. I mostly like all the technical stuff which usualy gets hidden when a build is ready and completed.

The re-edition of the famous Mercedes-benz 300 SLR by was a great older kit to build, I've build this model in 2011. Not the most easy one. The tubular chassis has to be build carefully to make sure all later parts fit correctly. The engine, gearbox and all other technical stuff comes with the kit. I only added the lines from the oil tank to the oil cooler next to the radiator. Decals are provided for the seating, and worked fine using Microscale decal set and sol. Revell clear matt used for finishing these decals. Body is done with Revell matt aluminium. The engine is a straight 8-cylinder, atmospheric with mechanical fuel injection. Brakes are drums front and rear, placed inboard. The front brakes are visible in front of the engine. The rear ones are hidden under the enormous fuel tank. As cooling of these brakes was quite problematic, fading was an issue to keep in mind.

Rudolf Uhlenhaut was an engineer at Mercedes-Benz and responsable for the famous Mercedes racingcars from the 50's. Not all the chassis were build as a racingcar, and one of these was turned into the famous coupé. He used the car as his private transport, and the story goes that he drove the German Autobahn around Stuttgart at very high speeds with this car on many occasions. The original car still belongs to Mercedes-Benz and is on show in their fantastic works museum in Stuttgart and taken out to classic car events as part of the heritage collection of Mercedes-Benz.

  1. I'm not a car guy so probably don't appreciate everything you put into this, but it is a cool-looking subject, and the finished model looks very sharp.

  2. Very neat work on this classic Mercedes Benz. Herr Uhlenhaut played such an important role in Mercedes' competition history, a legend in his own lifetime. Amazingly I visited the museum in Stuttgart only last month and photographed this car. The museum is a "must see" place for any transport enthusiast, and there even some classic cars for sale.

  3. Beautiful job, Ferry...nicely done! 🙂

  4. Just incredible, fine work to be proud of!

  5. Looks fabulous! I had the Revell 300SL years ago and remember it to also be quite a handful to build. I think Revell also did Stirling Moss's SLR roadster. Would be a nice set all three of them! What did you use for the tartan seats?

    • Thanks you Josh. yest that's right they did the "722" from the Mille Miglia and the 300SL. The tartan seats are done with decals provided in the kit. With some tlc and decal softner they work fine. A matt varnish finish did the job.

  6. Very smart looking build, Ferry.

  7. Nice Mercedes! I prefer the modern AMG GT but I suppose this is the original! Cool build.

  9. Outstanding! What a machine! Your model shows it well, Ferry.

  10. Very nice. Just had one of these drive past me on the 101 freeway here in the City of Lost Angles, car capital of the world.

  11. Beautifully done!
