25th Anniversity IPMS Roscoe Turner Indianapolis Show

March 10, 2018 · in Show Reports · 29 · 2K

Took the opportunity to travel up the road a bit to attend the 25th Annual Roscoe Turner model show on the SE side of Indianapolis, Indiana. They had a total of 570 entries covering all categories. Couldn't photograph them all but here are a few that caught my eye. The Phantom is eye candy for those fanatics, and you know who you are. The B-17 is the HK1/32 kit and boy is it big, as well as the Mosquito weighing in at 1/32 scale. Some really nice auto's, race cars and trucks were well represented and lots of figures and sci-fi.

The garage diorama was outstanding with lots of small detail. It even had empty plastic quart bottles of motor oil thrown in a waste can. All in all a good time and an opportunity to socialize with a fellow iModeler, Jeff Bailey. Jeff's on your left in the pic. Bernie, wish you could have made it because the pork tenderloin sandwiches we had for lunch were outstanding. Jeff however, had biscuits with sausage gravy, stated it took him back to his old Army days. Shameless plug, my 1/48 Academy P-38F took a third place. Life is good, happy modeling to all on iModeler. Now go build something, John Ferdico how's that P-400 coming along?

  1. WOW...now I can see why I don't bother entering shows. Spectacular work there.

  2. Tom, great stuff, thanks for sharing. I always enjoy shows especially when I see something that is not only a nice model but just brilliant, and I see that with that German helmet made into a diorama. Thanks again for sharing !

  3. Some outstanding models there Tom, from all genres.
The one that caught my eye is that Tin Goose, just fantastic. Can you remember what scale is it?
But then there are a lot of other great models in those pics (just more commonly seen), like the Do 17 Z, also looks excellent, and the one you mention, the big Phantom.

  4. Some really excellent models on display there, and congratulations on your bronze medal. But, hey, why aren't you wearing your iModeler T-shirts?

  5. A strong show, Tom, and well done on the Bronze.

  6. That build was destined for recognition! Well done, Tom. And thanks for sharing - some great inspiration to be found there - that Africa Korps helmet is pretty special!

  7. Thanks for sharing, Tom. I like that USS Wasp, CV-18 model. Is that the Revell 1/542 angle decked Essex?

  8. Thanx for sharing these great builds from show. Makes me motivated to get back to the workbench right now!

  9. Congrats on the bronze. I like the artillery diorama built on the fritz helmet. Very cool!

  10. Congratulations on the win, Tom. That P-38 deserved it.

Loved the Phantom. Reminds me of the time Air Force magazine paid me to take a ride in one (best. rollercoaster. ever.)

Bet you didn't know that Morgan 3-wheeler is still in production 80 years later. One of the guys who works at the LHS on weekends has one. It's licensed as a motorcycle.

    • Thanks Tom and yes I had no idea that Morgan is still in production. I'm jealous you got a ride in a Phantom, had to be quite an adrenaline rush. However, I did have a former Thunderbird team member take me up for a round of stunts in his Pitts Special. Doing a hammerhead stall in one of those produces quite a rush. Wife and kids said I had a grin on my face for a week.

      • Tom, the Charlie Brown/Stigler dio is very much on my mind and I chip away at it when I can; you've reminded me I ought to stick a post or two up.

Nice to see they're letting Jeff out with the public now and again...

  11. Great photos & write-up, Tom.

Meeting Tom at last year's event cemented my interest in the iModeler forum and began a good number of friendships (beyond being "online friends") that stretches coast to coast here in the US of A online as well as overseas in several countries.

Tom had 3 entries; one of the others being the Bf109 of the KassPass build (Kasserine Pass GB) he recently posted as well as a lovely F8F Bearcat which is part of the great Year of the Cat group build. (GB if you're new here) Personally, I thought the P-38 should have won a higher rating but I didn't see EVERY entry, and besides - I'm prejudiced in Tom's favor!

As it was last year, the Roscoe Turner IPMS folks put on a great show and the entries were VERY good and quite interesting. Even though I was exhausted after the show (I don't walk or stand well these days) It was well worth the visit. Thanks to Tom (and his friends "Scan" and "Grin" - they know who they are) a great time was had by all!

2 thumbs up for this one! Bravo ! Ausgezeichnet ! Merveilleux ! Bene !

  12. Thanks for sharing this, Tom. What an eclectic collection, all the way from the distant past to the far future. Congratulations on the placing, well earned.

  13. Looks like a first rate day out! I'm sorry I didn't get to accept Tom's gracious invite, but life gets in the way of art. And stuff. Who are them two handsome devils in the photo?

    • Well the handsome one on the right is Tom, Bernie. The other Pilgrim just wandered in, photobombed the shot and almost broke the camera. LoL!

Best $5 admission I've spent in a long while!

  14. Nice pics Tom, and congrats on the award!

Just checked this one out Tom. Great selection of subjects and photos. I wish I had time to build more. But inspiring all the same. Well done on the bronze. Thanks for posting.

  16. First time I’ve missed our show in 20+ years but I was sick as a dog all weekend. Congratulations on getting an award Tom, I’ve seen models that medal at the IPMS/USA National go home empty handed at our show. The competition is fierce and judging so many high quality models is tough.

One interesting note, 90% of the entries come from the 9 counties that comprise the Indianapolis metro area and the great majority are built by modelers that are not affiliated with any of the local clubs.

There are a lot more of “us” out there than we realize, and that’s a good thing.

  17. Good show, Tom, and sorry I missed this. Great to see a KP GB entry win some precious metal over this! Nice work!

  18. Thanx for sharing, Tom. The Mosquito (the only one in the show, which surprised me!) was featured right here on this site, and the Hannover CLII is mine as well. Yes, this is always a Great show, with builders and displays from many states! Well worth the trip! Hope to see some of you guys there again next year!

  19. Looks like you guys had a great time !

Thanks for sharing these photos with us, and congratulations on your P-38 win. Like Jeff I'm a little biased and think that it should have placed even higher.

I just noticed this article. Sorry for the late reply.

That new tool Do-17 looks great. Now I need to get it in gear and start building up mine.

    Thanks again Tom.
