John Mills Movies,Ice Cold in Alex, Dunkirk.

July 7, 2018 · in Uncategorized · · 11 · 1K

A local cable station had a mini marathon of John Mills , first was Ice Cold in Alex, a group of soldiers in an ambulance cross the desert to get to Alexandria, the second was the 1958 version of Dunkirk. Both a bit dated but I think they hold up, story wise.

  1. I recently posted a homage to the film "Ice cold in Alex" using the Airfix Austin K2 ambulance ,it's in my gallery here on iModeller.
I have never seen a John Mills movie I didn't like especially Ice cold in Alex and Hobsons choice featuring Charles Laughton and a very young Prunella Scales who went on to play Sybil Fawlty in Fawlty towers .

  2. Thanks for the info - I might check out that early version of "Dunkirk". 🙂

  3. Thanks for this, Robert. Personally my favourite Mills film is 'We Dive at Dawn' - the British 'Das Boot'. This has made me think there's maybe scope here for an old idea I had about having an 'iModeler at the Movies' themed Group Build.

  4. I might well be up for that Dave , lemme have a think...

  5. One of my favorite scenes too.. and then they have to do it all again...

    • That's the kind of British stiff upper lip that got us through the war...

" Alright you men ,there's nothing else for it but to start again ,we have to get over this enormous sand dune"

"but sir ,why don't we just go around it ?"

" Just you get on with it private or I'll have you on a charge when we get back to Alex, it'll be jankers for you my lad and you nurse Snivel why don't you wipe away those tears and see if you can rustle up a nice cup of tea for the lads eh?, why it was my fault not yours I never should have expected you to do mens work without making a complete bloody hash of it"

  6. David, great minds think alike? I was musing several months ago about a GB titled Hollywood. Just think of the subjects one could build from one of your favorite movies. The subject matter would be endless, planes, trains, autos, trucks, tanks, ships, figures, dioramas, this list could go on for days. Just a thought.

  7. Yep, I posted this about a year ago -

The more I think about it, it definitely shouldn't be just about war, but a celebration of movies and modeling. It opens up every genre and would be a huge amount of fun. I don't know, how do you feel about organising a 'joint effort' GB? The reason I've had the idea 'parked' is mainly time (or lack of), so maybe doing it together would be a thought?
