Airfix New tooled Spitfire XIX

December 15, 2012 · in Aviation · · 3 · 1.8K

What I love about these new tooled kits are the simplicity and directness of the design of models. This one was built OOB. The decals work reasonably well given the price paid for the kit and are way better than some more of the up scale kits. The landing gear is simplified and is molded in relief. So only 2/3rd of the rounded struts are shown and wheels are a bit soft. The canopy is a tad thick and the glazing for the camera openings are thick too.
The caveat for these kits are the price which is very affordable and allows a modeler to mix and match kits to build new Marks and even add some resin bits and up grade the model all at reasonable price.

Many new tooled kits out of the Far East in 1/72nd are now running in the 40.00 dollar range... another advantage of picking up one of these Airfix kits when entering the home and in front of CEO of the house... her eagle eyes will note the price too. No furrowed brows of disgust or rolling of the eyes will happen.

  1. Nice Job Stephen. The Airfix XIX is pretty much the polar opposite of the Fujimi PR XIX i built, which was over-engineered and ridiculously expensive. Took a while to build too.

We both agree on the choice of paint scheme it seems! LOL

Airfix has been steadily improving with each new release; The A4D, Mustang and Spitfire have been particularly well-received. Some have grumbled about the deep panel lines and i totally understand. But Airfix is clearly working to do better on that.

  2. Didn't realize that one was out already. Excellent work on it Steve (where is the M2 review, huh? huh?)

Can't wait for them to release the Spit XIV from these molds.
