Supermarine Spitfire Mk1 'LO-B, 602Sqn, 1940 (Tamiya 1:72)

December 19, 2012 · in Aviation · · 10 · 4.1K

As beautiful as the is when its all 'buttoned up', I wanted to depict one stripped down as if in maintenence. This was a real challenge in such a small scale but I think it worked. The base is hand-made from Beech and I used cork padding with static grass.

Detail sets:
-Resin engine and armament set
-Resin cockpit

Scratch built additions:
-Aluminium fuel tank and cowling and additional wiring to the Merlin engine.

Painting/Markings:
-Iwata HP-B airbrush
-Gunze//Model Air paints

  1. Great work! Rich detailing gives the impression that this is a larger scale. Congratulations.

    Vlad.

  2. Amazing workmanship, Mr. Whall...had you not identified the scale, I would have thought it much larger. As I once stated, I certainly would not want the job of picking a contest winner from this month's selections. A winner in my book!

  3. This is the 72nd scale? It can not be! Model looks gorgeous!
Allow myself to make one small comment) - it seems to me a little bit wrong with the color of dark green, somehow did not like.

  4. Charles... Another winner and great looking photos as well.

  5. I think what got Maxim about the green is the blue tint in it. RAF Dark Green didn't have that.

That said, and it's not a complaint, this is one of the most incredible models I have seen in a very long time. I would have thought it was at least 1/48 scale if not a major modification of the Hasegawa/Revell Spitfire I in 1/32, had you not said it is 1/72 - that makes it even more incredible in my book.

With the number of 10s being voted here, I suspect we have found a winner for this month's prize. I suspect if that's true we'll all be taking up knitting after seeing what Charles does to that kit!

  6. I see what you mean about the 'blue tint' now I look at it - although it does look different under daylight in my study. In hindsight, maybe I should have lightened the Dark Green to scale effect as this is the mix I normally use in 1:48...hmmm... 🙂

Positively superb, I am trying to build the same kit with mods...if I can get 10% of your master piece I will more than happy...cheers

  8. Fantastic work mate

  9. A very late reply. The best I can do is to echo all the earlier comments. Absolutely superb. At the very least I thought it was the Tamiya 1/48 kit!
