1/48 Monogram F-8H VF-111 Sharkmouth

February 14, 2013 · in Aviation · · 8 · 1.8K

Hi all, it has been quite a while since I last posted.

I hope you enjoy my F-8H conversion of the F-8E. I used pictures I took of a at the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, FL. The earlier models of Crusader had a nose cone that had an oval crossection, so that meant I had to master a new cone to have a few copies for other Monogram kits I wanted to convert.

The next step was to taper the nose to the new cone. The fuselage needs to be narrowed from around the break in the canopy (where the windscreen and main canopy meet) towards the nose, with the details rescribed afterwards.

I used Superscale decals and a Black Box cockpit. I also used the KMC airbrake and well, and modified the main gear to sit more accurately.

I apologize for the photo where I tried to illustrate the oval nosecone. I had very limited time today, as gales are moving in to the island- I moved as quick as I could to take advantage of natural light without the wind flipping my kit!

I hope to post again soon, I have had very limited time lately to participate here.

  1. Shoulda faced it INTO the wind, Dan...not sideways so's it could get "flipped"..!
Seriously, that's some nice work and feel free to post more pics when things calm down. Either add to this post or put it in the Jet Age forum group.

  2. This is a type of aircraft which is just begging for a sharkmouth. almost a pity that so few of them (IIRC) were painted this way. Very nice model, thanks for sharing!

  3. Outstanding work, Dan! Great job re-shaping the nose - it looks spot-on.
