Hasegawa 1/48 A-7E Corsair II

February 1, 2013 · in Aviation · · 8 · 4.1K

Here is my A-7E 'Valions' .

I had started this one back in '06 or '07 and when I got to the LE flaps I sort of ran out of steam with it so it sat on the shelf of doom until last year when I finally dusted it off and decided to finish it.

I used the PE set (which included the pre-printed/colored cockpit parts). The Eduard set has lots and lots of tiny, fiddly pieces...especially in the landing gear area. It was one of those things were you had to tackle it in small bites or it would overwhelm you. Patience and perseverance paid off, however.

For the intake I used a bit of putty and a lot of sanding (with specially made sanding devices I made using rolled sandpaper and wooden dowels). I used the 'poured paint' method to paint the intake's interior. This took several days to dry (mostly because of the depth of the intake and to make sure it was really, really dried/cured before masking). This is probably one of the smoothest non-resin intakes I've done so far.

The canopy as well needed a bit of attention. The PE set has the bow and side rails and some putty is needed to get the side rails to look appropriately three dimensional. Care in sanding is a definite need here. The kit does not come with ordinance and I had toyed with idea of adding some but I think it looks good without it.

The model was painted with Xtracolor and acrylics.

The base was from Hobby Master that they sell for their diecast airplanes.

So there you have it...another Navy jet for the collection.

  1. Jeff...Well done model with beautiful photos to boot. It s definitely the standard to meet when I finally decide to do mine.

  2. Nice work. I like it.

  3. Until you mentioned it, I didn't even notice it didn't have any ordinance. The fuel tank(s) and MER's are just right. Fill it up too much and it'd look "cluttered" and hide some of that fine detail work. I guess the Sidewinders were included, huh? I've got (make that 'had') one with absolutely NOTHING slung under it, not even the pylons. I painted it white w/day-glo orange accents as in an ED AFB chase aircraft I saw somewhere. I think it may have been one of my kits that suffered a "cat"-astrophe. I'm gonna hafta try that all-white photo set-up I keep seein' from some of you guys. Really makes the model "pop". Nice work there, Jeffster.

  4. Very nice indeed! Fantastic job on the intake, I would have guessed that was a seamless resin piece if you hadn't pointed it out first. Gotta love the SLUF, such a cool aircraft. 🙂

  5. Great looking Corsair, Jeff! Very much like the Hasegawa 48th scale Tomcat I believe the A-7 is a kit that does not exactly build itself.
The base looks good too, but it could use a little weathering so the white areas would get toned down a little.

  6. Thanks for all the nice comments guys!

      Hello Jeff,
I recently came across an article written previously about a build of an old 1/32 revell f-14a. It was stated that estes phoenix decals were reduced to fit the kit missiles. I hope that You are the builder, because I would like to know if You have that file available, and if possible could e-mail it to me for my old kit.
      Thanks in advance,
      Ron Avery
