1/48 Tamiya Spitfire Mk.1b

April 6, 2013 · in Aviation · · 4 · 3.6K

An early version of from the past which is still one of favourite pieces of my Spitfire collection.
This is Spitfire Mk.1b with the markings of No 92 Sqdn. during the summer of 1941. One of the original cannon armed Spitfire Mk.I's issued to No 19 Sqdn during 1940, R6923 /QJ-S was bought up to Mk V standard and issued 92 Sqdn early in 1941. (Note the early style spinner and exhaust).
The base model is 1/48 Tamiya Spitfire Mk Vb. The cockpit was modified with :
PE instrument panel
Eduard PE RAF seat belts.
Ultracast Spitfire resin seat # 48149
And Cutting Edge GM2 gunsight # 48157

The additional replacements parts to convert it from Mk.Vb to Mk.Ib are;
Ultracast #48112 De Havilland 3 blade propeller and spinner
Ultracast #48040 Spitfire Mk1 exhaust
The elevators from Ultracast # 48038 Spitfire Mk1 Control surfaces set.

The painting was done with Gunze Sangyo acrylics. Upper surfaces were painted to RAF dark green / dark earth and the underside to the RAF sky duck green.
The decals were from Aeromaster (# 48682).
The model is still vulnerable (or defenseless) against criticism about her late type oil cooler and metal ailerons. Maybe we can consider that they were also upgrated with the guns during her operational life.

Happy Modelling

  2. The same can be said of any/all of Tolga's work. A true artist in the field.

  3. Nothing less than superb.
