It’s all fun and games till someone loses an eye….

This is the 's 1/48th scale “Galactic Raider” . The kit is all resin

and consists of 11 pieces and decals by J-Bot. The parts were well cast without any deformed pieces or pin holes, but I did find the resin to have a “soapy” feel to it and it was very oily and required several cleanings before I could get auto primer to bond tightly.

This kit depicts the “early” version of the Cylon Raider seen in seasons 1 & 2 of SyFy's Battlestar Galactica, and is marked as the one captured and flown back to Galactica by Kara “Starbuck” Thrace. The only modifications to the kit were drilling out the various engine exhausts and inserting colored rhinestones, and the use of blackened brass tube for all guns. The battle damage was chipped out with a knife. Paints were Tamiya Gun Metal, Alclad White & Dull Aluminum and Magnesium. The bloodstain is a mix of clear red and smoke. The decals worked great and laid down with no problems.

The stand is also from Fantastic Plastic and was purchased separately.

While I suspect that the real difference between the “early” vs the “advanced” raider is improved CGI tech and a higher special effects budget, the main visual cues for the early raider are:

Squared off gun mounts with one small and one large gun under each wing.

No vents or exhausts on the blisters on the upper wings.

Impulse engine exhausts are round, and the FTL drive is encased.

No more Cylons for a while...I promise.

Thanks for looking, comment and suggestions appreciated.

  1. Well done. The panel color variations are well executed.

  2. man that's pure evil

  3. that is total awesomness

  4. What the frack? Another battle star fan!
    Brilliant work.

    • Thanks David. I was a big fan of BSG, all except the last 1/2 season. That was just horrible. Now I'm really enjoying "Dark Matter" & "The Expanse"

  5. So say we all. The last few episodes were just messy and disjointed.

Great work on that raider. Beautiful variations on the finish and 'weathering'

    • I always thought that instead of the New York scene that after they showed the groups splitting up, that the cut to a science where the Galactica has been discovered or better yet cut to a different version of the Armistice Station opening from the miniseries and just as the Cylons appear, cut to black with "This has all happened before, it will all happen again"

      • Now that would have been a far more satisfying ending. After everything they took us through in all those series it did seem they just stuck the New York scene in as an afterthought without any attention to the layers and layers of plot and imagination that went before. Would have resonated more to take it back to the mini series.
