I wouldn't normally post an in progress build here but this one needs to be shown so anyone else contemplating this kit will know what they are getting into.

This is the 1st rerelease of the Renwall "Military Wrecker" circa the late 50's or early 60's. It is currently on the shelves again.

Some day I will learn not to build for other people. This one is going to a man who served in the Berlin Brigade in the late 70's.

As far as the kit is concerned it represents a M816 medium wrecker. The accuracy & fit is pretty good but that is the last of the good news. Everything at a minimum needs flash cleaned off. I wanted to post the pictures before I started priming so all the filling of the sink marks & mold tags can be seen. I will admit to a certain amount of AMS, especially on the bed bottom, a lot of filling is required just to create a presentable replica.

The roof assembly does not count as a repair. It is being converted from a ragtop to the cold weather package hardtop.

I've rambled on enough here, but let the builder beware.

  1. Which filler do you use, Al?

  2. That is Tamiya basic gray & white fine in the single tube.

  3. Thanks for the "heads up" on this kit. I have a Revell/Renwal "Atomic Annie" kit, it will take a bit of work to make it a nice model. Hope you post pictures of the completed wrecker!

    • If I'm still sane when I get this beast done I will post. Not being able to throw the thing against the wall is a result of commiting myself to someone to build it.

  4. Sure do know the pain of whipping a vintage kit into shape, but often those can be the most fun!

  5. Yeah, what Rob said! Seems every time I look into the stash to start a new project, I always look past the more modern and well engineered kits and pull out something old. You never get bored with the older kits.

    • I know what you mean about not getting bored. The only thing is I grew up with these older kits & don't particularly want to relive my youth in this respect.
BTW, I forgot to mention it in the posting but that tree trunk I'm holding in my hand is sprue.

  6. I drove an M816 in Germany 1973-75. I named it " Mr. Natural ". 128 Combat Support Hospital. It was used to unload some of the heavy hospital units from the back of deuce and a halfs. I hope to see yours when finished.
