Fujimi 1/48 Focke- Wulf Fw190 D-9

April 26, 2014 · in Aviation · · 19 · 3.2K

When came out with this beauty, it was "state of the art". Decades have passed since then, but it still sits on my shelf collecting dust. Back when I built it, my reference material was limited. I had a picture post card from the USAF museum in Dayton, Ohio, with an Fw190 D-9 in this scheme, or at least that's how it appeared on the postcard. I thought that if it were nice enough to buy the post card, it was nice enough to try to copy on a model. (The postcard is post card is posted) I can't speak for it's accuracy. There are so many "experten" on 190's and 109's, one hesitates to post anything less than their best effort, but I've always liked the looks of this one, as old as it is.

  1. I agree Joe, looks good.

  2. I know it works for decals on that are still on a sheet, but I wonder if you left it in sunny window for a few days, would the yellowing of the decals still go away? That's really the only thing that detracts from this, but it can't be helped. It's just the way it is! Everything else stayed looking nice. I like the subtlety on the mottling on the paint scheme!

  3. The olf Fujimia Dora's an "interesting kit" - scale of the fuselage forward of the cockpit is something around 1/40, while from the cockpit aft, wings and tail, it's something in the vicinity of 1/50. "something around..." and "something in the vicinity of..." are tells as regards accuracy.

The one that's even more "interesting" is the Bf-109F/G/K.

  4. Forty years ago, wow, Joe, it's in fantastic condition, i'd love to have seen it when you first finished it.

  5. Hey Joe, first of all who gives a toss about "experts" if some one doesn't like something you built that's there problem, second of all that's a really nice build joe, I don't normally even look at German stuff but I have to say you got the mottle effect very well, well done you.

    • P.S. ,I'll bet if you very carefully painted out the decals staying strictly within the the lines of the originals, really just dry brushing out the yellowed area and then applied a new set of markings followed by a fresh coat of varnish you could give this puppy a new lease of life...

      • Thanks, Neil, I'm sure it's missing a few (as Simon says) "fiddly bits" from over the years, but it sits with all the rest collecting dust, not going anywhere.

  6. I remember when fujimi's dora was the only game in town (in 1/48) their box art drew me in ,and still does. thanks for posting joe.

  7. Nice one Joe, 40 years old and looking good!
If only I could say the same about me LOL.

  11. Joe,
Beautifully done. You did an excellent job on this old kit.
I took my sling off for a bit to respond to a number of past articles by hunting and pecking. I will stop soon. It is hard to believe how much the typing annoys the shoulder. It's only been four weeks so it has a way to go to completely heal.
