Gloster Javelin FAW 9 in 1/48 by Airfix

June 9, 2014 · in Aviation · · 15 · 2.9K

Having built the Canberra PR 9 & the Sea Vixen with a great deal of pleasure I was lucky enough to win this kit at our monthly IPMS raffle. I think the is Airfix's best yet. Fit of parts was perfect; no filler anywhere. Canopies like crystal; engraved detail very good & decals excellent too. I chose not to do the refuelling probe as I think it looks terrible (makes me think of a medieval knight in the jousting lists). Apart from seatbelts, there's no after market gear on this build. Hope you like it.

  1. Great looking Jav, Tony. I've seen a couple of these kits completed now, and they always have just the right look. I agree one of Airfix's best kits.

  2. Nice build Tony. Real impressive.

  8. Tony,
Many, many thanks for posting your beautiful Javelin, one of my favorite aircraft. I agree with you about the refueling probe. I won this kit in the iModeler February contest, but have not started it yet. Yours sure gives me something to shoot for. Excellent, and well done!

  9. Very nicely done! What brand of paint did you use?

    • Thanks John. Topsides are Gunze Dark sea gray # 331 & Dark green # 73. Underneath is Floquil (Railroad Colors) Platinum mist (enamel). I wanted to replicate the RAF's 'High Speed Silver so I brushed on Future over this before decaling. I also use a thinned Future mixed with Windex, water & a little Polyscale flat as my final finish. Panel lines are done with Faber Castell artists pen (Indian ink fine fibre tip wiped off quickly!). Incidentally, I thin all my acrylic paints with Windex. Works well for me!

  10. Tony,
Beautifully done. You did a great job on this .

  11. You're right it is one of their best. Yours looks great.

  12. The Javelin is one of the planes I "grew up" with, I remember having a Dinky Toys diecast model of one! This model really looks the business, Tony, excellent in every respect.
