Airfix 1/72 Lancaster B.II

July 28, 2015 · in Aviation · · 18 · 4K

Built out of the box, this kit represents Lancaster of 408 (Goose) Squadron, 6 Group Royal Canadian AF, RAF Linton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire. This aircraft was lost on Hamburg raid July 28/29. 1944, whole crew was lost.

Construction was straightforward, no big issues in assembly, some care is needed regarding the tight fit of main parts, so even a coat of paint might cause some problems. Eduard masks were used for transparencies, and I would encourage use of photo etched instrument panel since provided instrument panel decal that is highly visible after completion.

Colors used for inside Humbrol 78, and Gunze/Mr.Hobby Dark Earth/Dark Green/Tire Black for main camouflage. Bristol Hercules cooling ring was painted with Mr.Metallic Dark Iron with a drop of Tamiya Smoke.

Finishing coats were Tamiya Clear before and after decals, MIG washes, and Gunze Satin finish.

  1. Very pretty Lanc, Milan. I built one of these a few years ago, or it might have been the Revell version, actually, and was surprised at the detail provided in such a small scale. I've seen these Airfix versions at shows and they always look good. I was a little surprised to see the flaps down at first, but a lot of people seem to model them this way, so it must be a commonly accepted view.

    Again, nice looking model.

    • Thank you, Rob. Revell is also very nice kit. Regarding the flaps, Airfix offered the option in down position which was usually aftermarket feature that is why i think people like to open it.

  2. That's a nice-lookin' Lancaster right there now. I'd go to the "dark side" and build a 72nd kit if I could make it look THAT good. I remember 'back in the day' building the R-M 48th scale Lancaster - it was a behemoth IIRC. Two thumbs up, sir.

    • Although my eyeballs would prefer 1/48, I could not afford moving into bigger apartment to expand my display cabinet. Thank you, Craig i am glad you liked it.

  3. Lovely Lanc - really like the shading, especially on the underside black.

  4. Milan, she's a beauty! I was wondering whether to get one, and you've convinced me. Didn't think anyone would do this version, Airfix continues to pleasantly surprise! Plus, I've got their bomber support set, which should go nicely with it. Great stuff!

  5. Great looking model, Milan it brings back childhood memories for me, I received the original Airfix 1/72 Lancaster one Christmas back in the 1950s when I was still in short trousers!

  6. Odlican, imenjace! 🙂 I really like the final look of the build, especially shading on black. Photos are great too!

  7. Nice work Milan. I haven't seen the new Airfix Lancs yet. Do Airfix provide ordnance for the bomb bay?

  8. A great paint scheme on a great aircraft, nice build!

  9. Hvala imenjace! Thak you guys!
@Mike, unfortunately kit does not have bombs included. It is sold separately as Bomber command ground set

  10. very nice build

  11. Excellent build and very well presented, Congratulations !

  12. Nice build of the very seldom seen radial engine Lanc'. I just got this kit recently on Ebay, didn't even know this kit was even available until I seen it while looking for something else. So I snagged it, anyway great build, the detail in this scale is amazing and the quality from Airfix puts it right there with Tamiya/Hasegawa. I am currently on a long term (over 10 years) off and on with the Tamiya 48th scale version, the original 70's boxing, may even be older. This is an inspirational kick in the tail Lancaster you did Milan, bravo! As far as I know Tamiya is the only one who kitted the Lancaster in 48th scale, unless somewhere along the line Revell may have boxed it under their label.

  13. Wow Milan, that looks great! Airfix really are coming up with some winners, hope they have a plan to update their Halifax, probably the most neglected bomber aircraft of all when it comes to models. Great to now have a good Bristol Herculese engined Lanc kit available! Looking at the canopies, it seems they have really improved in that area too.
