1/48 Special Hobby F2G as XF2G-1 14692

October 22, 2015 · in Aviation · · 32 · 2.5K

While bringing the into production, Goodyear modified a number Corsairs with different components that would be used on their production F2G's. The R-4360 was test fitted and flown on a -1. Some components tested on other Corsairs were an air scoop, the bubble canopy, the extended tail and more. The results of these tests culminated with several XF2G-1 Corsairs that incorporated all the combined modifications that would be used in the production F2G's. One of those fully modified Corsairs was XF2G-1 BuNo 14692 and that plane was the one I decided to model. I used the 1/48th military version F2G kit. I used bits and pieces of the True Details F4U-4 cockpit set to enhance the kit parts. I also used the TD weighted wheels which I trimmed a bit to eliminate some of the bulge at the bottom of the wheel which I thought was a bit excessive. The decals came from Lone Star and the model was airbrushed with Model Master GSB. The lime green cowling front was 'eyeball' mixed to achieve that color. The final step was an airbrushed top coat of Testors clear gloss. The last picture is a shot of the actual XF2G-1 that this model represents.

  1. 🙂 ... Greetings ... 🙂 :
Nice to see a CORSAIR with color. Nice work on this one Jim.

  2. Nicely finished and photographed, Jim...a real beauty - as always. Good to see you posting again.

  3. Jim she is one fine lady! The F2G is the finest looking Corsair of them all. I must take this one out of the stash and give it some attention. Great finish. Beautiful. Well done!

    • Thanks Morne, I highly recommend building that version of the Corsair to add to your collection of fine models. Like most models, that kit is not without it's challenges but the end result makes it worth the effort.

  4. Good looking Corsair - but man, that lime green...!

  5. Thanks Greg, I enjoyed your comment about the lime green. I haven't checked it out yet but it may glow in the dark.

  6. Jim, turned out really well! I didn't know about the lime green nose, but it sure adds to the appeal. Bet the paint shop at Pax River had a good time with that, back then.Maybe they went to Sears?

  7. Thanks Bernard and that lime green color on the nose was actually there at the time.of that photo of the real bird. Somewhere in my files I have a color shot that shows it. Sears paint...wow that brings back some memories.

  8. Jim, Wonderful looking model, Always enjoy a "Hot Rod" Corsair. The longer nose and scoop give it a real "more muscle under the hood look".
Bubble tops on corsairs hmmmm, I guess I'm a bit of purist on that issue.
She does look fast just sitting there.

    • Thanks Terry and I agree she does look fast just sitting there. That 3,000hp R4360 made her a force to be reckoned with. A shame that only ten of them made it off the production line.

  9. Jim,
Any Corsair is beautiful. This one is outstanding and you did a marvelous job on it. Like Morne said, I need need to get this out and build it. If I ever get through all the ones I am building for others. My hat is off to you on this one.

  10. sweet build jim...as usual

  11. Beautiful work on what I know personally is not the easiest kit.

    • Thanks Tom, that kit certainly had it's challenges. In all my years of plastic modeling, I think that was the first one I ever ran into that didn't have alignment pins nor part numbers on the sprues. The vacuform canopy was fun too.as I've not worked with a lot of those...guess it's a good thing they pack two in the kit. And then there's the resin engine that I think had more parts than the rest of the kit. Yes sir, if a modeler wants a challenge, they'll get one with that kit.

  12. Fantastic work. Anyone tackling these kits and pulling off a great job like you did, deserves a medal.

    • Thank you Nikola...I appreciate your comments. I'm just pleased to be able to add some of my building efforts to the many fine models others have shared on this excellent web site.

  13. Great finish and BUILD

  14. You've certainly captured the look of this "mean machine", Jim, and, according to some of the comments above, it wasn't an easy job with this kit.

    • Thanks George and should the urge ever hit you to build that kit, it has the potential to make a fine model. Unlike other versions of the Corsair that saw mass production, only ten of the F2G-1 / F2G-2 'Super' Corsairs were built so the military marking variations are quite limited. Still, no self-respecting Corsair collection is complete without one.

  15. Nice work Jim, on a wonderful bird mate.
Looks real clean and mean, lovely finish too.

  16. Oooo! Daddy like! Really great looking model there Jim.
    California Steve

  17. Beautiful Corsair, Jim and a very colorful bird.

  18. Yet another ourtanding build, Jim, as is per your usual. Really beautiful work.
