Review: Detail and Scale, F9F Cougar

November 20, 2015 · in Reviews · · 2 · 2.1K

I was also able to secure a copy of the Detail and Scale series on the a few days ago. Greg Kittinger posted a pretty comprehensive review here, and most of my impressions mirror his. This is my first foray into an interactive e-book and I am pleasantly impressed with the format and the ease with which it can be navigated. The photos are outstanding, and I can assure you you won't be bored as there a LOT of them. They are supported by pages of informative text, the most interesting to me being the section devoted to the use of the TF-9 as a fast FAC aircraft by the Marines in Vietnam. There are plenty of color drawings, so if you can't find a scheme that interests you, you're not looking very hard.

Download from iBooks was simple and effortless and took literally no time at all.

The only downside for me at this point is that the book is in an Apple format, and the only Apple device I own is an iPhone. This somewhat limits the size and detail of both the photos and text due to the small screen size, but that is not at all an unfavorable impression of the book, but rather a limitation brought on by my choice of devices. I am looking forward to seeing this series in a PC or Kindle format, which will surely broaden the audience who will use this book.

Very well written and formatted and I would recommend this book wholeheartedly. Bert Kinzey and Rock Roszak have a winner with this one.

As a small personal aside, I remember Bert Kinzey being a member of the El Paso Scale Model Society when I joined the club as a kid in 1970!

  1. Deja vu. Nicely reviewed.

  2. Thanks for the review, Jaime!

All of the new Detail & Scale books are available in both Apple iBook (Mac/iPad/iPhone) and Amazon Kindle formats. There are free downloadable Kindle Reader apps available at Amazon.com (plus there are links on our website at http://www.detailandscale.com). There are reader apps for almost all platforms--IOS, Android, Kindle and PC--and we keep the photo quality in high resolution which is very rare for a Kindle formatted book.

The book content is identical in both formats, but Apple allows us a number of complimentary copies to give to reviewers while Amazon does not.

    Thanks again, Jaime!
