1/48 Mig-21UM

December 24, 2015 · in Aviation · · 13 · 2.5K

I wanted to do something a little different on this build. I had run across several pictures of abandoned 's in warehouses, so instead of a warehouse I used a field. The kit is the Mig-21 UM built OOB and painted with Lifecolor paints.

  1. Nice work! It is always more difficult for me to "age" a kit, but you nailed it!

  2. That's great! Reminds me of a "Top Gear" episode when they came across a veritable Mig Graveyard in eastern Europe. Excellent, subtle weathering on a major scale.

  3. Fantastic weathered finish and setting Lloyd

  4. Great job. I'm going to start on an Su-15 like that soon. Very cool idea.

  5. Interesting concept I like it, may even attempt one myself in the future.

  6. weathering like that is damn hard. You did it!

  7. Lloyd, that is what weathering oughta look like! Could you give u a hint or two? That would work for some of my redundant builds.
No graffiti, that just depresses me. Oughta let 'em rust in peace.

    • on the paint, I masked the canopies then I primed with Model Master Metalizer Aluminum after it dried I applied Lifecolor paints in a standard camo pattern, after it dried I used clear postal packing tape applied to the camo and pulled it off when I was satisfied with the results. I clear coated and applied the decals after they were dry I unmasked the canopies and sprayed flat clear which frosted the canopies. I then applied a light gray filter from Ammo by Mig to give it that faded look.

  8. Pretty hard for the nit-pickers to point out anything "wrong" when you depict a heavily weathered 'relic' as this. As always, a bang-up job, Lloyd - I like it.

  9. Nice diorama !

  10. Looks about like photos I've seen - very realistic, and a fun subject.
