1/48 Hasegawa A6M-2b

April 26, 2016 · in Aviation · 10 · 1.8K

Haven't posted in a while, so i am glad to finally get something on imodeller.
I present the Hasegawa 1/48 A6M-2b kit, with an aftermarket cockpit detail set and aftermarket decals. I had wanted to do one of the Pearl Harbour raid zeros for a while.

I was able to get a partially built kit as part of a trade years ago. I had to strip the decals and decided to repaint it using the new Tamiya IJN grey green. I had to scratch build a radio mast, and also had to get a replacement canopy, tank, prop, and landing gear as the parts were missing from the kit I got. Brush painting the frames on the Zero canopy was a bit of a stretch as my eyesight is not what it used to be!

I learned a lot about Pearl Harbor Zeros researching for the build, and as a result, I have a Kate and Val in progress as part of a planned attack wave trio. I probably won't be able to get the other ones done until the summer break.

The nice thing about the Hasegawa Zeros is you can place the canopy open or closed without having to glue it down. That way you can keep dust out of the cockpit!

  1. Another nice clean build, Dan. Ah, dust...the nemesis of the modeler (and boy, do I know it!). 🙁

  2. Really nice Dan.

  3. Looks good! I also want to do a zero in this lighter scheme - just seems less monotonous than all the green Japanese aircraft!

    • Thanks again Greg, the interesting thing I learned in the research is that the shade out of the bottle was what the paint looked like at the start, but weathered steadily into a light grey, and in some high contrast pictures might even look white!
I don't feel that acylics spray as smoothly as enamels- I have tried a number of different mixes with no luck. I would rather enamels in this colour if i could find it!

  4. Another beauty, along with your Hellcat.

  5. Looks like a very neat build, you certainly did a good job on the canopy framework.
