iModeler August Awards

September 19, 2016 · in News · · 32 · 1.9K

It's high time again for our monthly iModeler retrospective... this time looking back at our August entries.

For the readers of iModeler, August was a great month. 140 new articles were added to the headlines during the period, prompting 1675 comments. That's a substantial increase in numbers, and with it follows the quality - our shortlist this month has grown beyond "short", but this for very good reasons!

Every month, all Headline contributions are included in our traditional honorary prize draw. We're awarding the Best in Show title to the entry that in the eyes of the jury represents the month's highlight in terms of modeling quality and presentation. In additional to this, we allot another award to a randomly chosen article to emphasize that all contributions to this site deserve recognition.
Please don't hesitate to join iModeler and take part in our next monthly roundup!.

iModeler Best in Show - August 2016

The jury's award this month goes to Dmitry Ryzhenkov's 1/72 scale Tupolev Tu-134A.

As one of our readers put it, "airliners are deceptively simple models. Since they usually don't have so many external features, making the most of the surface detailing and hitting the right colours and the right sheen becomes all the more important." Dmirty has really succeeded in doing just that, but not only that - his innovative lighting system adds another dimension to the completed model, making it look equally convincing in dim light as it is in full daylight. We think that this combination of ambitious undertaking, innovative thinking and perfect execution are worth the distinction as our August Best in Show.

But wait, there is more...

There's also another prize, the Random Award, envisioned as a token of appreciation to all our contributors. This is selected through a random draw among all the entries of the month. This time, our lucky winner is Scott Nelson with his Aussie Eight Spitfire. They say one cannot have too many Spitfires... thanks for sharing them at iModeler!

  1. Congratulation to all, great builds, all of them.

  2. How did you ever choose a best out of that bunch? The quality of stuff here is out of sight, great work folks.

  3. I agree with Bill...I dunno HOW you guys can choose one of these contributions over another. Tough decisions...all are standout.

  4. Good point. Well, yes it's always a tough choice..

I a nutshell: We take our judging seriously; work in a team; openly discuss all points of view; go by the results as presented; always look for strengths rather than faults; respect the intent of the modeler; allow for the variety of subjects and styles. If there are many top contenders, we consider the presentation, the writeup and the commentary. Finally, we ask ourselves "what brings our hobby forward?", "what brings iModeler forward?".

I'd like to reiterate that "We’re awarding the title to the entry that in the eyes of the jury represents the month’s highlight in terms of modeling quality and presentation.". In other words, we do not aspire to pick "the best" on some absolute scale, indeed I'm quite convinced that in most cases this would not be possible. There are many perfect models on show every month, each in its own particular way. Alas, we only have one prize to give away...

Hope this gives a glimpse into the process. Please also check the formal contest guidelines: http://imodeler.com/help/contest-rules/

  5. My congratulations to the winners and to all the modelers shown, and to the judges. Martin, thanks for the insight, i like the strengths rather than faults approach.

  6. As always - touch choices, excellent models, and worthy winners!

  7. All really excellent. I couldn't make a choice between them.

  8. 🙂 ... Greetings ... 🙂 :
Congratulations too all of you. Who said modeling is dead or dying ? My hat is off to everyone of you, thanks for the show.

  9. All are well deserved, Congrats to all.

  10. What's being judged are photographs of some models that are worthy of the gold on many levels. To some degree its a photography contest. I see several worthy models... since this is a magazine perhaps the article and its material should be a factor. I'm looking at the recent SPAD article that was posted and the story that was written contributed so much to the meaning of the model and its presentation. I know folks have a budget, deadline, real jobs that pay, and moving the webzine forward takes the lead and the practicalities of running a site is the priority. The quality of the models being present(Top notch) and the categories being shown are like vinegar and oil in some cases ( Modern Airliner and WWII fighters). Perhaps a bi-line of this months awards goes to...for promoting the hobby, showing some innovation in technology, writing, construction and painting goes too...

    • Steve, you are right on many points. To a degree it is an article contest - how the model is presented, photographed and described contributes a lot to our (and the other readers') perception of it. Indeed we are always including all articles in our judging review, not only those that show the completed models. Although this adds to the oil vs vinegar factor, I'd like to think that one day an innovative construction or weathering article might be our Best in Show. And yes, utlimately it's all about promoting the hobby and highlighting the effort that (according to our humble view as the keepers of iModeler) is moving it forward, either by way of inspiration, innovation or helping others.

  11. Now that's a line up of talent!
    So well done guys.

  12. A good selection and a congrats to all !, and also a job well done by our editor and staff of judges. This can't be easy, however you can tell that they do a very thorough job in judging. The models are all excellent and show a good variety. This is just a show and tell forum, a way to have a little more fun with our hobby. Win, loose or just get a few nice comments is good enough. I just enjoy good models, and looking at good models helps me build better. Thanks to all, after all, we are all helping each other.
