Pegasus 1/12 Scale Monster from 'Relic'

September 10, 2016 · in Sci-fi · · 10 · 1.8K

Greetings monster lovers! Today's offering is the 1/12th scale solid vinyl "Mbwun" monster from 1997 movie 'Relic'. I started with a base coat of Tamiya Acrylic Deck Tan, then detailed it out with Vallejo inks and transparent colours. The eyes are Archer Fine Transfer decals, the fangs are Vallejo Skin Was ink brushed over a Polly Scale dirty white base and gloss coated with Future. The claws are Vallejo Black ink over the Tamiya Deck Tan base coat. The styrene base was primed with Tamiya Fine White Primer from the spray bomb, the tile area masked, the carpet sprayed with Vallejo Red Ink, and Transparent Red, then Dullcoted. Glass debris was brushed with Future. The Idol was based with Gunze 1500 Black primer and dry brushed with multiple shades of grey. The white tiles are the Tamiya primer, glossed and then washed with Mig wash for German grey to get the grout lines. The stanchions were based in black and then coated in Testors Metalizer Non-Buffing Brass, and the ropes are Vallejo Violet Ink. This is the last of what I call the Pegasus Unholy Trio. They were all great fun, and I look forward to Pegasus' next fantasy/Sci-fi release. Enjoy the pictures.

  1. Scary-lookin' dude...wonder how they knew what "scale" it was? 🙁

  2. Don't know the movie but it looks cool.

  3. Refreshing looking monster(s).
Realistic garnish and the skin is very lifelike. I like. 🙂

  4. Another cool critter.

  5. I love the movie, and your work is most impressive on that scenery!

  6. I believe you have caught the essence of this beast George. I've read the book, I have followed the whole series, but not seen the movie.

I have this kit but have been reluctant to start it since I have no experience working in vinyl.

I have a couple of questions if you don't mind.

    1. What did you use to glue the joints?

    2. Did you fill the joints, if so what did you use?

    3. Do you have a primer under the base coat, if so what did you use?

Thanks in advance for your help and once again very well done on this.

    • Thanks for the compliment. The movie is lacking, but the book rocks. Now. As for the building and finishing, I build all of my vinyl kits using gap setting super-glue and very careful use of zip kicker. Any visible seams are dealt with using Perfect Plastic Putty, which goes on easily, smooths with water, and dries very quickly. Any putty that is stuck in the detail can be evicted with a sculpting tool. Priming is usually done with Tamiya fine white or grey primer from a spray can. Gunze Mr. Finishing Black 1500 in a spray can is also a favorite. These are cellulose lacquers, and as such do not affect the vinyl. Never use pure lacquers or enamels on vinyl. They never dry, and stay sticky and gross for ever. All the colours I use are Tamiya acrylics, thinned with Tamiya acrylic thinner, or Vallejo, using proprietary thinner, or my dwindling stash of Polly Scale water based, also thinned with Tamiya thinner, or Testors Acrylic thinner. Dull coat can be used as a final coat, but air brush it on thinly, so it doesn't screw with the vinyl. Future for gloss coats, and Tamiya's new acrylic clear flat, semi-gloss, and gloss coats work very well as well. Hope that this helps, and is not too confusing.
