Wolf WR1 1977 Formula OneTamiya 1/20

December 5, 2016 · in Automotive · · 28 · 3K

Continuing my previously unplanned theme of F1 cars that won on their debut. Here we have the 1977 Wolf WR1 driven by South African Jody Scheckter to victory at the 1977 Argentine GP, it went on to win the Monaco and Canadian GPs. The newly formed team founded by Canadian businessman, and petrol head, Walter Wolf, went on to finish fourth in the manufacturers' championship, not bad for a team with only one car, and Scheckter finished second in the drivers' championship. Jody Scheckter, of course, went on to greater things with Ferrari, eventually winning the world championship. The car itself was one of the "kit cars" of the time having an aluminium monocoque and using the Ford Cosworth DFV engine and Hewland six speed gearbox package. The car features very little sponsorship and has a very smart dark blue and gold livery.

The kit was originally issued in 1978, but had an update approx ten years ago to include Cartograf decals and some etched details. Although the mouldings are showing their age it makes up very nicely. I buffed up the tyres and added a aftermarket seat belt set. Thanks again for looking, George.

  1. Your "production rate" of perfectly build racers is really impressive, George. Love them all.

  2. Beautiful work, George!
I really enjoy the 1/20 scale F1 cars as well. I am stunned as this car is almost 40 years old. What a difference to today's machinery.
I'd really love to see a line up of all of your builds in one photo-a big one.

  3. Excellent work, great paint work. 🙂 The seatbelts and photoetch really bring it to life.

  4. Very nice, George. The black/gold with a dash of red is really an eye-catching scheme.

  5. Beauty mate! That is a great looking race car!

I second that motion Bryan! Wouldn't that be a great shot, or even a great "theme" thread for you George. I'd love to see them all together.

As a 14 year-old racing fan in Geelong Australia, I was fortunate enough to see four Formula One world Champs in one race. We saw Jack Brabham, Jimmy Clark, Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart race in one of the Tasman Cup races held at Sandown Park in Melbourne. Was I excited? Oh yes!

    • Thanks for your kind comment, Gary. I remember reading about the Tasman races in Autosport and Motor Sport magazines at the time, I think the drivers enjoyed the activities between races as well! Seeing those four great drivers in one race must have been terrific.

  6. Lovely to see this George - nice work - certainly looks the part

  7. I agree with Bryan and Gary, George.
A nice pic of the "Williams" garage..
    Another beauty mate.

  8. You never cease to amaze, George...another winner.

  9. Very sharp-looking model. Attractive, eye-catching scheme and as others have said, it looks nicely done.

  10. awesome job George

  11. Absolutely beautiful.

  12. Smashing ! (It's Me FLAG !)

  13. George I'm always impressed with the work you do on your racers. Nice job on the Wolf WR1.

    • Thank you very much, Tom, I always enjoy looking at your models, too! I think that's one of the great things about iModeler, you get to see all of the postings, whether they are of your particular interest or not.

  14. Great build George. The engine detail is fantastic!

    • Cheers, Richard. Those mesh covers are part of the updated kit, but, I think, the thin black wire provided for the ignition leads was part of the original offering, certainly more detailed than many of the others in this series.
