In support of the Midway Group Build…

June 3, 2017 · in Aviation · · 8 · 7.7K

I'm sure that this in-flight diorama of a diving SBD Dauntless from the Moson Models Show will be remembered by many. As we have many SBDs on display today due to the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Midway, I have taken a liberty of gathering additional pictures of this dio from my camera card. This model is certainly one of my personal favorites and there's a direct Battle of Midway connection.

The markings S-9 belonged to an SBD-3 belonging to VS-5 from the USS Yorktown during the Battle. This very machine is the hero of a famous picture from the battle showing the US Navy SBDs over the Japanese Fleet, with burning enemy ship in the background. The “Slow-But-Deadly” SBD destroyed the cream of the Japanese aircraft carrier fleet during the Battle of Midway.

The kit used here is apparently a 1/32 Trumpeter Dauntless... and if anyone knows the name of the builder, I'd be more than pleased to give an appropriate credit.

  1. A fitting posting indeed...that's gotta one of (if not THE) best models of the Dauntless (or any other, for that matter) that I've yet to see. Absolutely stunning workmanship on display there.

  2. WOW !

Stunning post Martin. This one really looks great. I mean everything about it. The crew, the plane, the display posed in a dive, dropping ordnance, you name it...

Thanks again for all of your help during this event. Without you and the crew from Imodeler it could not have happened.

    Hand salute Sir !
