Tamiya 1/48 P-47D Razerback 2Lt Lloyd Hathcock

October 28, 2017 · in Aviation · · 16 · 2.1K

My third in a series of aircraft flown by the Tuskegee airman. This one depicts a P-47D flown by 2Lt Hathcock with the 301st Fighter Squadron in Ramitelli, Italy. Build pretty much out of the box, but I did include a Ultracast seat and some wheels. The antenna is nylon thread and the paint used was rattle cans, along with some Model Master enamels and acrylics for the cockpit and tail.

The decals are from the AeroMaster Tuskegee P-39 and P-47D's sheet, AN48798, which I was able to score from another iModeler, John Ferdico. They were a big help John. The yellow stripes are from fundekals. You may want to check out their web page as they have some interesting decals. A P-51 B/C and P-51D remain to be built to complete this series for me. However, I'm taking a break to get started on the iModeler Kasserine Pass Group build, and have already discovered my $3 bagged Fujumi Bf-110 is missing part 52, the nose. The search begins.

  1. Nice presentation/build/photos, Tom...the Razorback is my favorite T-Bolt. 🙂

  2. Tom, nice addition to the collection of Redtails. Tamiya is the best 48th T-bolt, IMHO. No aftermarket needed, unless you want to gild the Lily. Well, maybe decals...

  3. Tom, you've made a beauty that finishes a near perfect triptych. Huge kudos. How are you going to display them?

  4. Thanks David, took me a second to figure out triptych, not commonly used in my vocabulary. Haven't figured out displaying them yet, have to wait until the other two are finished. Until then they will sit in my IKEA bookcase with all the others.

  5. Love it, Thomas. You have the whole "surfacing" thing down when it comes to paint.

    Great staging, too.

  6. Looks great, Tom. I’m really looking forward to seeing you add the P-51s to complete the lineup. That will be an impressive display.

  7. What a great series of builds Tom! And obviously a brilliant subject for a whole collection of aircraft. Well done on totally doing them justice.I can't pick a favourite!

  8. An excellent Thudcraft! Nice collection.

  9. I agree with everyone above. This one looks great Tom. I'm still looking for a background poster similar to the one you have used. The background setting looks great too !

  10. That backdrop almost outdoes the model, but not quite. Nice series of models, it would be great if you could somehow display them together.

  11. Ditto to all comments above - good looking Jug and some great pics.

  12. Well dang, Tom. NOW I have to go to Hobby Lobby to get a background poster so I have a great background if I ever finish & post something! Oh yeah, I still haven't finished the F6F-3 yet, but I'll get there one of these centuries. I now have "built" a great spray booth so I've nearly run out of excuses to work on the actual model!

Your collection of Tuskegee Airmen's planes is outstanding! Love the Red-Tail Jug.
