Supermarine Spitfire MkIIa

January 30, 2018 · in Aviation · · 25 · 1.8K

I felt a need to do something quickly. So I decided to built this out-of-the-box. This is the new mold on the scale. But, Spitfires are always a great adventure to build and collection. I had nice pleasure doing it.

  1. Not my scale, but it looks very well detailed for the 1/72 standards. Your Spit turned out great Roberto

  3. Lovely presentation, sir...and who doesn't love a Spit (in any scale)...?

  4. Roberto, looks really nice, Well done !

  5. Very good looking Spitfire... I don't build 1/72 anymore... My eyes won't let me ! 🙂

  6. Nice Spitfire, I think the first ever kit I built, a long, long time ago, was an Airfix 1/72 Spitfire, quite different to this one!

  7. Great job! And well-presented, too!

  8. I can imagine that once you begin with a Spitfire you can't resist to build also the other versions...
By the way, what is the difference between Mk.I and Mk.II ?

    • Thank you Peter.

I would like really to built several versions, but I guess It will impossible. I'm almost 60 years old, and I have more around 150 kits which I would like to built (LOL).

This Airfix model has option parts for I and IIa. The basics differences are:

Spit I: two blades wooden propeller, more rounded spinner, straight canopy, antenna mast and small protuberance located below righ engine exaust.

Spit IIa: three blades metal propeller, less rounded spinner, bubble canopy, different antenna mast and no protuberance.

  9. Bob - It's a great model which, like many of us oldies, would cause me too much heartache (or eye ache) in that scale. I remember back when eyesight wasn't an issue in my teenage years, you could buy for 3 bob (£0.15 today) pamphlets called Profile Publications. The Spit volume had a full colour sheet for NKoK which maybe Airfix used as the basis for the decals. Incidentally, I think by the time Spit IIs were rolling out of Castle Bromwich, the radio aerial was simply an internal fitting inside the aerial mast and they didn't have the wire going back to the fin. Even some of the later Mk 1s were the same, something to do with the technicalities of the RT system that baffles me.

    • Thank you, Paul.
Very nice your comments. Good memories of Profile Publications. I have some of them, which I received as a gift from a friend. About the antenna wire going back the fin, I had really difficulty to decide, so the instruction sheet doesn't have it, but I found several drawings/pictures with it. Now I'm sure, after your comments, so I'll remove the antenna wire. Fortunately it is simple. Thank you again.

  10. Great looking Spitfire, Roberto!

  11. Beautiful Spit, not enough pictures! Looks great.

  12. Hello guys. My english is not good enough. Sorry.

  13. I don't think I could see the detail at 1:72 even with cheaters & magnifier. Awesome job. Spits are SO cool.
