iModeler May Awards

June 22, 2018 · in News · · 21 · 2.4K

Once again it is time for our monthly retrospective - a look back at some of the notable articles posted on this site during May.

It was an very good month, with 158 new entries adorning the headlines of iModeler during the period, prompting an impressive 2,495 comments and 39,600 individual article reads.

According to our long-standing tradition we are giving away a pair of awards as a token of appreciation to our contributors. The jury panel this month were @halvarvonflake, @gregax and @raikisan.

Every month, all Headline contributions are included in our traditional honorary prize draw. We're looking for the entries that represent the month's highlight in terms of modeling quality and presentation. We also allot an award to a randomly chosen article to emphasize that all contributions to this site deserve recognition.

iModeler Best in Show - May 2018

Over the past few months, George Johnson gave us insight into the build process of his Zoukei-Mura Horten 229. From the very beginning it was clear that something special was in the works, and many of us looked forward to seeing George complete his build. Well, it is safe to say he made it. Congratulations on a well deserved iModeler Award, George!

But wait, there is more! – the Random Award

We are also awarding a prize as a token of appreciation to all our contributors. This is selected through an entirely random draw among all the entries of the month. This time, our lucky winner is Paul Teixeira and his Hasegawa 1/48 USMC Harrier II.

  3. Fellow Modelers,
Congratulations to all. The standard is excellent.
My personal favorite: Sukhoi Su-27 UB.

  5. Congrats, George! Can't wait to see your model at the NASM.

  6. Great entries ALL! The Horten was nothing less than spectacular, but the others were outstanding, too!

  7. Yeaaaaa...I am so excited I WON something...I never win anything..thank You Imodeler.com Folks.
ALso congratulation to George on his 1st place win. I have been cheering for your build since u 1st posted it as a WIP. I knew you would get it. I bet you will win many more prizes with that model!

  8. Thank you all for this honor. I have to say that this month's models are incredible examples of the art of modelling demonstrating the modellers finesse, skill and artistry. Any one of these could just as easily have won best of show.
Now I just have to figure out how to get it to the IPMS show in Arizona in August.

  9. Well done George, I knew that was a winner early on in the build stages!
And congratulations to everyone else, amazing modelling.
Thanks very much for the honourable mention also! Very much appreciated.

  10. Well deserved! congrats!

  11. All well deserved. Incredible collection of talent. Congrats to all.

  12. Winners one and all, but the best in show winner was a no-brainer IMO.

  13. Congrats to everyone mentioned. This had to be a very hard choice considering that all are excellent.

George earned it and his Ho-229 is going on display at the Smithsonian next to the real plane... It doesn't get much better than that. Well done my friend.

  14. George, this build was a true delight to "watch". Congratulations. Thanks to the jury also for my nomination and kudos to everyone else!

I would hate to think of what would have happened if this kit didn’t make “Model of the Month”. I learned something from following your posts George and some of the Smithsonian photos where of interest . Many of the photo’s prior to your article showed the cockpit section and not the wings or the rear of the aircraft which has a Swastika. I wasn’t aware of that. Your article prompted more reading. When the Smithsonian example was brought back to the states the military wouldn’t touch the aircraft for flight trials. I am sure that given the history of the quality of German glues used on wooden aircraft causing them to crash… they didn’t bother and Northrop’s experience in flying wings relegated the Horton to museum status.
There is a movement to make a flying replica along the lines of the Collins Foundations Me-262. All that group needs is money. Congratulations George.

  16. Thanks, Stephen. From what I understand, and my observations seem to confirm it, the nazis only put swastikas on the vertical surfaces of airplanes. Since there are no vertical structures on this airplane, they put them on the tail end of the body.

The Air and Space museum also has a very interesting article on the Horten's restoration. They even show photomicrographs of the plywood structure. You can veiw them and read the article here: https://airandspace.si.edu/collections/horten-ho-229-v3/materials/wood.cfm

One other 229 was built and flown, but crashed due to an engine malfuction. The plane was equipped with an ejection seat, but the pilot didn't use it and died on the way in for a landing.

  17. These are all so beautiful, such great work! Thank you for sharing, it is inspirational.
